...and while It's not my personal favourite record of the last 20 years I'd find it hard to argue with The Stone Roses 'The Stone Roses'. Probably the last/most recent truly great guitar based LP* by a British band. Though again it's not even my favourite LP of it's era and zeitgeist -much of whom's contemporarys are laughably bad in hindsight ...Jesus Jones, Charlatans, James, plethora of floppy gits in need of a slap.... take your pick.

For non-guitar based I'd find it hard to look beyond Fat Boy Slims 'You've Come A Long Way Baby' ...and that despite really, really disliking 'Praise You'.

Just on the technical point of progressing the topic: as well as breaking things down by years, you could maybe do it by the style of music as well. Like, Best German-Language Albums Of [1990-1995, 1995-2000, etc.], Best Albums To Pick Your Nose To [..], Least Worst Metal Albums From [..], or of course just by simple, proper, agreed-upon genres or other worthwhile titles. Might be a fairer, more inclusive and more interesting qualifying criteria than just pure taste and time? Just food for thought anyway. Also would it be best just to keep it to the 90s and 00s than the more arbitrary and confusing 20 years?

I'll keep things simple for now by suggesting DJ Shadow's Endtroducing..... as a contender for best overall. Though any one of a dozen French offerings would probably end up getting my vote owing to personal taste, with The Upper Cuts by Alan Braxe (with a little help from a few amis) maybe just squeezing it.

Trash Can Sinatras - I've Seen Everything
You Am I - Hourly, Daily.
    Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix.

All practically flawless albums. Maybe not heard by millions, but that's their loss.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Dont understand the love of the Strokes. Is this it? is a few catchy numbers with little substance and mountains of hype. Ditto any Arctic Monkeys stuff.

Some quality ones not yet mentioned:

    Pearl Jam - Ten
Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun, Takk
    Blur - Think Tank
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
    <insert witty remark>

Haven't listened to much of the Trash Cans but those two are excellent albums alright. Daft Punk's Discovery should be noted too I think

I prefer Nevermind tbh , slightly better tunes , I realise as the more successful album I shouldn't say that , still best opening line to an album ever

Don't get me wrong nevermind is a quality album but I just love In Utero's raw edgy no holds barred sound. I think I read somewhere that Kurt thought Nevermind was too polished (especially when you listen to bleach before it). However he might have took it a bit far for in utero because the record company went ape after they heard the first cut and I'm pretty sure they made Albini and Kurt straighten it out a little.

Unplugged is a quality album as well. Pity they never got round to making a proper 4th studio album......

How did I forget to put down OK Computer and Kid A

Best Album of the last 20 Years poll

I've tried to vary the range from the choices put forward, but this is the list I've come up with to choose from

Can't believe we all forgot to nominate Portishead - Dummy as well, or Bjork Debut

    I didn't forget. I just didn't like them.

First act as mod is poor. Shocking lack of Screamadelica in that poll.
