Is the goal bonus the wrong incentive for City players?

In general, teams perform a lot better when they play as a unit and collectively striving to win games. The goal bonus does not lend itself to that at times, proved when you see players take a strike on goal that would never go in when they had an easier option to square it for a certain goal. I know this happens anyway but its even more so with the bonus.

If the team cannot be motivated to play well together purely for the sake of winning and doing well and accomplishing their own personal and collective objectives then adding a goal bonus is never going to help that actually happen.

Some players become pedestrian and passengers on the team and its down to them having different motives, or lack of a determination to achieve. I think they are removed from the objective because they play a different role in the team, which is no less important than scoring goal but they do not get rewarded for their efforts. It actually detracts for the team effort.

In short, I think it’s a bad move and needs to be looked at.

Exactly, well its not even about the money, but if the team cant motivate themselves to score one more than Cobh then whats the point? They should be wanting to win the game, not wanting a goal bonus.

Thats quite a bonus when the players are being paid (what I'm sure is) a decent salary to score goals in the first place. I have a few questions.

Is it paid out regardless of the circumstances - would it be paid out for a last minute penalty in a 4-1 loss, for example? Also, do keepers have a clean sheet bonus?

Was this something the players were asking for, or an administration idea?

How would people feel about win bonuses, rather than scoring bonuses (although you may already have win bonuses also)? It addresses the issue A Face was talking about, as it encourages a team performance more than individual bonus does.

But I'd also agree with him that a player shouldn't need any extra incentive to want to score goals and play a part in their team winning.

Probably a bit of both but I now the low basic and big bonuses idea was popular with administration.

I agree. However if it was used as was the intention, bonuses as opposed to high wages, then it makes sense. Particularly in our league where everything depends on your success.

I can understand the attraction of a lower base salary with bonuses - as you say it would protect the club during lean times, but it just seems likely (to me) that you'd get a lot of bitching about who didn't pass to who, and why player X is a greedy b******d for not giving the ball to the equally greedy player Y.

All that said, have there been any rumblings of dissatisfaction from the players or admin?

Completely agree with you. I agree with the idea of low base plus bonuses but it should be implemented better. For example if the assist bonus was equal to the goal bonus(both being lower than the 500).

Or a high win bonus etc.

We completely went the wrong way about it, but as I said at the time it was a man who didnt understand football making the decisions. The new man will hopefully have more sense.

No. There was talk that they wanted too, of course they forgot that it was already written int he contracts so couldnt be changed

The goal bonus is a ridiculous idea. Dont think George has passed the ball to anyone all season.

Should be win bonus only as this would make them play more as a team.

The goal bonus is a better idea than a win bonus as fans want to see more goals. I'd prefer to see more games like Friday nights 5-0 wins instead of sitting back on 1-0 leads.

The only problem is that it may lead to selfish players in front of goal. If the goal bonus was divided amongst all players who appeared in the game it would be better.
