Nice group. Good to see this getting started- regular football will do the likes of Anthony Doyle and John Reilly a world of good.

Our fixture list by itself here.

Sure they had that in the U-21s league, albeit this is a bit stronger.

I think we're just making our old U-21 team play here, and bumping the freshers into the U-20s league or something like that.

You were always allowed three overage players in the U-21 league. More if you didn't mind getting docked points.

The standard in the A championship will be a good bit better than the U20/U21.

I think we're just making our old U-21 team play here
Our reserves are mostly comprised of U21s, we have no choice.

A point I made. But overage players would still have gotten a regular game with the U-21s.

But I was originally talking about this season. Up until now they have gotten very little playing time at any level- now they will be playing every week.

    Pointless argument!!!!!!!

    Excessive use of exclamation marks!!!!!!!

Are these being played on the pitches by the Sports Centre?

As far as I know, all A games are to be played on the same pitch as the 1st team.

A championship is open age. No overage players alowed in U20 and the A Championship games are being played in the Bowl.

has the new Division added three new grounds to the Official list of LoI grounds I have to attend?

    Leah Victoria - Tullamore Town
    Fahy's Field - Mervue Utd
    and Drom - Salthill Devon.

I knew I should have paid more attention to the U21 league when Tullamore were in our goup. Does anyone know anything about these grounds, I know some UCD fans lucky to get to Drom in 2007 for an FAI game.
UCD played Mervue Utd in 1985 as holders of the FAI Cup. But IIRC that match was at Plessey, I think we won without a replay...something.

I know I'm slipping by not getting to the grounds as I need to. But I'm only short a couple f full games ( seen about 20 minutes of a Pike Rovers game at Jackman park so it's off the list til I see a full game there and then it stays off the list)

Also, I understand the rules state two winners playoff for title plus €20,000. non-league side in top four will play-off with lowest First Division side. Does top-four mean runners-up in the group?

I believe it will take only a couple of years for a side to challenge a runners-up spot. But once they have it, they will have proved stronger than the First Division side they face.

Drom was an awkward place to get to. I stuck up a map somewhere at the time. It's linked on this site on a post of mine but I've no idea where at this stage.

It's not very clear from the FAI press release but I seem to remember it being non-league teams in the top four of their group that were elligible for a play-off when the idea of the A League was first brought up.

I agree, any team that can finish second in a group with 6 premier division reserve teams should be well capable of beating the worst team in the first division. If a team finishing fourth gets a play-off this year, I wouldn't be so sure of them winning though.

That top four in a group seems very generous. However, if we are talking about development, then you have to reward effort. Maybe the organisers are going for a moderate-turnover between the two lower divisions.

Does 3rd place beats fourth place in the other group?

It maybe some non-league clubs find they are so cosy in the 'A' Championship they won't want to leave it.

I assume you have to reach the semis? Or are there semis?

No group winners play-off for the title and prize-money associated with their position.

Seeing as there's only three teams eligible for promotion from the A League, it's possible, although rather awkward, to arrange a preliminary play off between them if, say, two or even all three teams finish in the top four in their group. You'd have to imagine, though, that third in one group would be better than fourth in the same group.

As far as I remember*, the idea was that the top non-reserve team in each group (the structure envisioned as many as four groups in its planning) would play off for the right to play the first division team. If the top non-reserve team in a group wasn't in the top four of that group they wouldn't get into the preliminary play off.

Going by that, if Tullamore finish 4th in our group and Salthill finish 2nd and Mervue 3rd in the other group Salthill and Tullamore will play off with the winner meeting the bottom 1st division team.

    * always dangerous!
