You'd pretty much have to not let anyone in wearing a Celtic shirt. It comes down to the maturity of the individual fans really. They're being asked not to boo players because they play for a certain club. That should be enough. In civilised society we shouldn't have to police such situations to prevent sectarianism.
In the terraces on Tuesady it will be very difficult to isolate the offending individuals.
The only thing we can do really is try to sing louder than the boo boys.

I am originally from N.Ireland. Come from a strong Loyalist background. Got away from all the sectarianism when I came to England in 1956.

A passionate Irish Rugby follower, I watched my first International in 1948 when Ireland won the Triple Crown.
Never minded if it was a Catholic from the South or a Protestant from the north who scored the winning try. It was McCarthy from Cork who clinched it in 1948 against Wales.

I supported both N.Ireland and also ROI since moving to England.
Was in Windsor Park at the W.C. qualifier in Oct 1993 and ended up hospitalised for being unable to stop myself cheering when McLoughlin scored the equaliser.

I have not been back to Windsor Park since.

I have encountered little sectarianism when following the ROI. I come over to Dublin several times a year. Was there for the Albania and Georgia games, and will be there again for Russia in September.

I detest prejudice and discrimiination in any form. I know that many of those who boo Rangers players at Lansdowne Road do not even consider they are being sectarian.

Okay it is not as serious as for example the attack on Lennon in Glasgow or many other incidents of violence.

BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT IS A STEP ALONG THE WAY.

Our fans enjoy a wonderful reputation, well deserved.

Don't let's throw it away

The reason I don't support Rangers, Linfield or Celtic for that matter is because they play in poor leagues which I don't find entertaining. I've watched games from both leagues on occassion so as to keep an open mind but they just don't float my boat.
If someone else supports those teams because they can see something which I can't then fair play to them, they truely are football enthusiasts. Sadly though, many people don't care about the football where Rangers/Celtic or Linfield/Glentoran are concerned. It's about being on one side or the other, wearing a colour to flaunt their allegiance, and cite religion as your difference when actually practising religion is not considered by most. We love to talk about our educated population and pride ourselves on our worldliness while being repulsive in our hatred for a team based purely on the fact that, traditionally, their supporters belonged to a Christian religion not too dissimilar from our own.
The epitome of irony is a Celtic supporter from Ireland being bemused by examples Muslim hatred for predominantly Christian, Western society.

Back to the booing though, it serves no purpose.

You're obv entitled to your opinion, and while I agree that both the scottish and IFA leagues are poor it is also fair to say that the EL is also very poor, so I think it would also take a 'truly football enthusiast' to find anything to float your boat in the EL. your argument doesn't really make any sense therefore, perhaps you don't support them because you just don't care about them or Cork are your local team etc..etc...

I dispute, the fact that many people don't care about foortball where the OF are concerned (don't know too much about IFA supporters), yeah there are a few nutcases on both sides, but there are 53k season ticket holders at Celtic Park roughly 60k fans per home league game (remember we only play Rangers twice a season at home, so thats to watch Motherwell, Dundee, Livi etc..), who go to watch football, and be involved in the family that is Celtic, not for some religious reason.

Have what ever opinion you want, but please don't be selective in what you read/listen to in order to justify your anti Celtic position.

to be fair Peadar doesn't claim that Celtic's support is all religiously motivated or that they don't have a huge fan base. he just states that many support them for the wrong reasons. a statement i'd find it hard to disagree with.

if you were born a mile from parkhead (or three hundred miles as the case may be) and your family are all celtic fans then the chances are you'll grow up to follow them, you're dead right. but there are people (especially in ireland) who look at Celtic as more than a football club, and do their best to keep finding republican links to the club be it based in their irish/northern catholic links or in the fact that rebel songs are sung on the terraces. it's these fans that Peadar is referring to.
