    Cup Specialists?

I was getting an ear bashing from a Rovers "fan" about Cork City being knocked out of the cup by Shelbourne.
He was rattling on about Rovers history and how they're the "most successful club in Ireland."
All that history accounts for very little and it certainly didn't do them much good against St Pats last Friday.
I can't figure out why people refer to Rovers as "Cup Specialists".
They haven't won the cup in 15 years and in the interim time they've only made it to two finals.
Shels on the other hand have been in six of the last ten finals and won four of them.
In that same ten year spell, Rovers have made it to one final and were knocked out this year again, by St Pats who have also only made it to one final in the past ten years.
Rovers are always telling about their success in the sixties but hell, a lot of weird things happened in the sixties.
It's almost forty years since they won the first of the six-in-a-row.
I have to conclude that Shelbourne are indeed the "Cup Specialists" and that there is no shame being knocked out of the competition by them.
All Rovers are specialists at is peddling their own history.

    Sure

even the mighty bray wanderers have a better FAI cup record than Rovers over the past 10/15 years

Unfortunately you can't just draw a line in the sand and say "we'll measure success from this point". Although it may seem to Shels fans (nineties children) that they are the cup specialists they're quite a bit behind yet. Rovers are the most successful team in Ireland and to be quite frank we're still miles ahead of the pack. Over the past 16 years other clubs have had a chance to make some inroads on our supremecy but haven't made much of a dent. When we move in to Tallaght you can look forward to the gap being stretched even further. It's ****in' great being a hoop and you better believe it.

History cannae be used to label someone as 'Cup Specialists'. A Club can only be judged on what it is winning..............But, Derry do hold the Cup at present!!

if someone talks about 'cup specialists' i always associate it with underdogs who may not do well in the league but can get to finals and turn it on for cup days. from that point of view, Bray.

it's obvious that Rovers have won more trophies than anybody else, and equally obvious that they've won very little in recent years. Shels are clearly far ahead over the last ten years though.
