What do u mean "by all accounts"....the BBC player ratings?? They are the biggest load of **** ever. Very inaccurate. I watched the game and he did have a good game despite the result. Watching him against Arsenal at the moment and the commentator just announced that he "had an impressive debut despite the result"

Seems to have been another solid display by Wilson today against Arsenal and put a decent cross in for Crouch in the first half.

It was a tough Premiership debut for him against West Ham on Boxing Day as he had to try and deal with Bellamy, but from the reports he did well.

Its a good opportunity for him to try and cement a place in the Portsmouth starting eleven and hopefully be another option for Trap in the future.

If he becomes a regular at Portmouth, he has a good chance of making the Ireland team with Finnan and Kelly out injured. Centre back is another option and hopefully he will end up playing there and turn out to be better than Evans.

Johnson linked with a move to Liverpool (who never should have sold Finnan in the first place) in January so Wilson could get an extended run in the side at right full

Do you mean Jonny Evans of MU? If so, why do you bring him into it?

Anyhow, if you are interested in the progress of young Evans, here is an excerpt from today's (English) Daily Telegraph, following MU's 1-0 victory over Boro last night:
"Ferguson also hailed his defence, who have not conceded a League goal for 10 hours and two minutes. 'We are very good defensively,' he said, lavishing particular praise on Jonny Evans, again understudying for the injured Rio Ferdinand. 'He's only 20 but for a young lad he reads the game so well'"
And in his match report, the Telegraph's Chief Football writer, Henry Winter , picked out "the excellent Jonny Evans" for special mention.

Of course, there remain any number of things which may prevent Evans fulfilling his undoubted potential. But at 20 years of age, he is already a hell of a way further down that road than Wilson (21), regardless of what position the latter ends up playing.

Because they're both from the north east, and as wilson plays for the FAI All Ireland team and Evans plays for the IFA provincial team it is obvious that they are going to be compared.

I would agree Evans is going to be a great player.

Speaking as a Liverpool fan, I would much prefer them to buy Foley than Johnson. He would cost a loit less and provide a lot more.

Shouldn't that be 2/3rd provincial team if we're going down that road again?

You never know, maybe he'll decide he wants to play for the north under Nigel Worthington and turn his back on playing the the mediocrity of the Republic side.

Yeah sports fans. The same way people always compare Henry Sheflin and Eoin Kelly.

Maybe you dont know who those people are but some people of a certain mindset dont want to know who they are

According to the back page of one of the rags today, our good friends up north are none too impressed about this and are trying to argue that as he has already played for the north he is not eligible for us etc etc.

    Would they ever................

Not being a Hurling fan, I am only vaguely aware of Shefflin and Kelly. Therefore, I have no idea whether Hurling fans compare and contrast the two. Neither have I any idea why that should be relevant to this thread.

But as a football fan, I strongly suspect your reason for comparing Evans with Wilson derives from your political outlook, which seems to colour your views on anything to do with football and "the IFA provincial team", as you insist on insultingly terming it.

It is the IFA, in the dubious shape of Kennedy, who are squealing again.

There will be no debate on Footie because those visitors from the OWC to this site have in variable degrees accepted (some with extreme difficulty finally overcoming a stuck mindset) that current FIFA regulations unreservedly recognise that NI born have a birthright to Irish citizenship and that fact alone fulfills 100% of the criteria for eligibility to the Republic under FIFA article 15.

Also, lets not forget that Marc Wilson has been tied to the Republic since his 21st birthday last August.

    "he may, up to his
    21st birthday
    , and only once,
    request to change the
    Association for which he is
    eligible to play international
    matches to the Association of
    another country of which he
    holds nationality"

    In general,
English born Alex Bruce can successfully apply to FIFA for registration to the Republic based on his only connection to the Republic is that his mother is born in NI. It is beyond me how anybody other than a monkey in a suit can think that a lad like Wilson, who is actually born in the 6 counties, has less right to declare for the Republic than Alex Bruce.
Apparently there is no limit to the IFA's inherent stupidity.
