Does anyone know if the 'A League Shield' is just the old First Division Shield recycled again ?
If not - anyone know what happened to the old Shield ?
To the best of my knowledge, Galway United were the last
winners of the Shield competition, in the 1996-1997 season.
The Shield itself was displayed behind the counter at Kates Bar,
who were then our bar sponsors. When the bar changed ownership,
it disappeared, leading to concern among United supporters as to
its whereabouts.
It was probably returned to United, who returned it to Merrion Square,
but it also plausible that it is in someones attic in Galway !
