(Non Ireland) Celtic legend Burns dies after cancer battle

Very sad News from Celtic....Rest in Peace Tommy

    Thursday May 15 2008

Celtic legend Tommy Burns has died at the age of 51 following a long-running battle with cancer.
The club's first-team coach contracted skin cancer in 2006 and suffered a recurrence earlier this year.
The former Scotland international spent 15 years as a Celtic player in the 1970s and 1980s and also managed the club for three seasons.
In a statement this morning, Celtic said he was a true legend who would be sadly missed by everyone.

Former Celtic player Paul Elliott has paid tribute to Tommy Burns, who died on Wednesday night.

Elliott joined the Parkhead club in 1989, where Burns was coming to the end of a 16-year stint on the Celtic playing staff.

And the Englishman hailed the Bhoys legend as one of the game’s true gentleman on Thursday morning.

Speaking to Newstalk’s Breakfast Show, he said: “My sincere condolences go to Tommy’s family. I arrived at Celtic in 1989. Straight away Tommy took me under his wing, he was one of the senior players, idolized by supporters, a true gentleman of a footballer, a winner on the pitch but a kind and sincere man off it.

“He was a fantastic player, with a delightful left foot and tremendous vision. But he had a steel about him as well and a quiet authority on the field. You could always see he would have a good career in coaching because it was clear he had such an understanding of the game.

“He has always been one of the game’s true gentlemen. I’m devastated. It’s a sad day for Scotland, it’s a sad day for Celtic and Rangers people, it’s a sad day for Ireland where a club like Celtic has had such an impact.”
