I'm leaning toward Cathal Lordan at the moment. No club. No contract. Midfielder. Corkonian.

Brian McCarthy is the guys name and the Press Release is on main Ramblers site here
Once it's not the other Brian McCarthy who graced St. Colmans!
Is he the fella who was with Athlone last year????
LESS OF THE BULL NOW!
I believe so. There's also a Sunderland and Portsmouth connection there as well I think
Found this on www.extratime.ie
Brian signed for Bohs in 2008 Brian McCarthy signed professional contract with Athlone Town on July 20th 2006, having graduated from the club’s Youth Team. A towering central defender who also has an All-Ireland basketball medal to his name.
He is 21 years of age so once again we sign a young player ahead of experience.
He's hardly going to challenge Gutsie and Murray. It's a bit of a kick in the teeth to Deccie Cahill and Mulcahy if he is here to challenge for centre back.
Although we were told last week that the player was a defender/midfielder so maybe he'll challenge for midfield. I'd rather seee him challenge for midfield than defence.

Athlone Town defender Brian McCarthy could be on the verge of a sensational transfer to Roy Keane`s English Premier League side Sunderland.
The 19 year-old completes a ten-day trial at the Wearside club today (Wednesday), after training with the Stadium of Light outfit and also playing for the club`s reserve side in a 4-4 draw against Bradford City last Thursday.
If McCarthy makes the big move across the water, it could throw a financial lifeline to a currently beleaguered Athlone Town. Should the move materialise, it`s believed Athlone - who have experienced well documented financial problems of late - will be entitled to a hefty six-figure compensation payment.
McCarthy, originally from Cork, moved to Athlone in his early teens and figured prominently for Athlone Town youths before breaking into the first-team in 2006.
If McCarthy makes a big move across the water.
The giant defender spent the opening weeks of the 2007 League of Ireland First Division season on the substitutes bench with Athlone, but later established himself as a regular in the side following an early season injury to fellow Town defender Des Hope.
McCarthy - who spent the majority of his debut season in Athlone`s first-team playing left back - has also recently attracted interest from Aston Villa and Portsmouth, and spent time training with both clubs over the last few months.
There has also reportedly been interest from several League of Ireland clubs, but McCarthy is thought to favour a move to England.
Indeed, Portsmouth are thought to be keen to have another close look at McCarthy and this could happen if Sunderland decide not to offer the strapping defender a contract - a decision which is expected to be made by Roy Keane and his Sunderland coaching staff over the next couple of days.
That is odd, how can that transfer go ahead, we are outside the window here.
Sounds to me as if he's here as a defender. Well if he's as good as what he is regarded then it can only be a good thing even if it is short term. I notice he's played left back. Maybe Hendo wants competition there, certainly if he played then the whole back four would be all be big strong players?

He's a great lad.
Centre half who has also played up front for us as a target man when needed.
Loves playing, even while he was waiting on the Bohs deal to go through he was
down to the astro to play as much football as he could.
Went to USA with the Ireland colleges and came off the bench to score 2 goals
in the 2nd game.
Hope he does well with ye.
Interesting story about the Sunderland trials ... but I'll leave that up to himself to tell ye![]()

He's a good player alright, he stood out playing for Athlone against us last November.
''and I for one welcome our new insect overlords''
sounds like atop class signing, delighted to hear it![]()
We control by attitudes positive mental attitudes not by rules.
Great signing, this kid was a rock for Athlone last year.![]()
Players lose you games, not tactics. There's so much crap talked about tactics by people who barely know how to win at dominoes. Brian Clough
