By the way guys, this is how email spam with images in it works. they just garner information on you as the image is loaded from their server.

A similar technique is used when those "Meet hot dates in CORK/DUBLIN" ads come up and can tell where you are. Perhaps fortunately though, the locations are based on people voluntarily submitting their location on other sites, so sometimes you'll get hit with a nearby town e.g. a row of brazilian beauties all claiming to come from ballydehob
