Fair comment we were missing loads of the first team
but surely a manager wants his team to play a certain way
and just because they aren't regulars in the team gives them an excuse to hoof the ball upfield with rather than pass to a teammate
even they have a set plan of instructions and if that was the managers plan then its not good enough for senior football

We were playing the leaders of the division and played a cautious 4-5-1 in the 1st half, he saw it wasnt working and changed it. The reason we didnt pass it that well was because we were closed down quickly by a more physical and experienced team. I think you may be being a bit harsh I do

Anyone know the attendance other night

Dundalk were so much better than us the other night that it wasn't funny. It was men against boys and it would have been a criminal act if we'd stolen a point. They were faster than us, sharper than us, bigger than us and cleverer than us. We're missing players for sure but let's not gloss over the facts either. The team plays some pretty ball and keeps it on the ground but we're utterly inept in the final third. I feel for Willie Bruton working his little feet off all by himself up front when 90% of the time we get bored or frustrated at not being able to fashion a break and lump it long for a finish anyway. Wayne Colbert has been doing the work of 3 in midfield, too many of our players are too raw to cut it at this level at the moment and it's costing us.

There is the guts of a good team there for sure in White, Purcell, Danagher, Barrett, Colbert, McCarthy and Bruton. Some of the others have genuine promise a la Harrington and the likes of Davy Ryan (attacking player) have their uses too. But Dundalk were home and hosed long before we clawed our way back into the game the other night and to pretend otherwise and blame officials and bad luck and the situation in the middle east for our woes is pointless.

Much like this 4-5-1 fiasco. It's clear as day that we carry more threat when we're playing with two up top. Yet for some reason we persist with this negative charade of pleasant football. I genuinely worry that this will prove to be a slightly more effective version of Mike Kerley's second season in charge in his first stint as boss, a team that gets the ball down and passes it about in a manner that is genuinely pretty on the eye but that slides from narrow defeat to narrow defeat. Thankfully there are some awful sides in the division this year but if we can't score against them all of our approach play is for nothing.

I appreciate also that this post will upset a minority of posters here who seem to view this website as an organ to force out wholly positive club spin but let's be honest with ourselves at least!
The ball is round and has many surprises.

That seems fair enough. I've only seen a couple of games this season, but have to say that as one of Mikes staunchest critics over the years, I like the way he's trying to play the game. There is a bite needed in the side, and perhaps when Paddy is back that will help. I still believe Paul Finnucane to be the greatest loss to this side as the options he would give us formation wise would be significant. We could use Tommy to get up and down the field more, Colbert would have more freedom, and Derek and Bruton could thrive off of better service.

What is disappointing is the inability to score more goals, especialy against the likes of Monaghan and Athlone who are quite dire.

agree with the 2 previous posts, i must admit though that for this season at least i would like to see the team continue trying to play attractive football and would accept a mid table finish, but next season must show big improvements. I think if the purse strings are opened a little and a couple of experienced players are brought in it could make a big difference. This squad will learn a hell of a lot from this season.
To finish i think with Derek fit again it could help Willie a lot.

i agree you on the point of 4-5-1 being a bad formation to be using amd that the striker was too isolated upfront on his own too often
but to say iThe team plays "some pretty ball and keeps it on the ground " i totally disagree it was like watching the "The crazy gang " in selhuarst park but at least the had some height! We hoofed it all night long and got us nowhere .
i hope we do get the players that are out at the moment back
But to be honest if we still play the same type of football we did last week
we wont be going anywhere and we wont improve as a club either

I meant in more general terms. We were outclassed the other night to be honest and it affected our game accordingly.

thought we were very poor the other night.people should not be surprised with our 4.5,1, ,MK has nearly always used that system, and lets be honest some players were unsure of their roles the other night, all we did was boot the ball upfield for bruton to chase.as regards the good football we are supposed to be playing does passing it poorly across the back count with it more often than not ending up with the lone striker chasing it nowhere or towards the touchline, its all negative,it improved a bit in 2nd half but not much.also didn,t see bruton ,mccarty or cosgrave rushing to take the peno.3 lads hiding while some of the young lads looked to the bench for guidence, fair to barret for stepping up to the plate, terrible pen though, obviously no assigned taker organised before kickoffif we had got a point it would have been robbery but welcome.

    Sigh Mr. Fish, sigh.

A substitution summed up the two sides for me. Dundalk were able to bring Paul Shiels on off the bench.

Now don't get me wrong Paul Shiels aint great. But he would walk into our midfield and make a massive difference just by virtue of his experience.

As for the rest of the season finishing above at least Kildare, Mon, Athlone and Wexford should be a bare minimum requirement because they are absolute rubbish.

Anything else and its a failure.

I'm starting to think maybe the Waterford experience damaged Mike............

Ones who were quite unlucky on the night I suppose.
