    Cork City 3-0 Limerick 37

Nice to see Cork put out a very strong side. It showed us some respect, and gave the young fellas huge experience. Heres the match report from the EL site:

    O'Callaghan double sees Rebels through
CORK City eased into the quarter-finals of the eircom League of Ireland Cup with a 3-0 win over First Division Limerick 37 at Turner's Cross.

Neal Horgan gave Cork the lead mid-way through the first half when he rattled home the loose ball after Liam Kearney's shot was blocked by Jimmy Fyffee and George O'Callaghan's effort had come back off the crossbar in the same attack.

Full-back Horgan kept a cool head in the box as he slid the ball low to the net to give the home team a deserved 24th minute lead.

Earlier Alan O'Connor twice went close to goals against a very defensive Limerick side who, like Cork, received a bye into the second round.

Dan Murray headed another chance wide early in the second half from Liam Kearney's corner and O'Callaghan's chip was held by Fyffe before the ex-Brighton and Ipswich Town man made it 2-0 with a low drive on 61 minutes from Denis Behan's lay-off.

O'Callaghan added a third on 69 minutes with another low drive after Behan again set up the chance.

Cork City (4-4-2) - Devine; Horgan, Darren Murphy, Murray (capt), Danny Murphy; Sullivan, O'Callaghan, Healy, Kearney; O'Connor, Behan.
Subs. Ryan for Kearney (68 mins), O'Brien for Healy (75 mins), Gamble for Sullivan (83 mins), Lordan & McNulty (not used)

Limerick 37 (4-5-1) - Fyffe; White, Danaher, Barrett, Cleary; Cosgrave, Fogarty, Daly, McCarthy, Curtin; Ryan.
Subs. Bruton for Curtin & Manjor for Ryan (both half-time), Hayes for McCarthy (65 mins), Grant & Fitzpatrick (not used)

    Referee: Padraig Sutton (Clare

Well, considering that George O'Callaghans weekly wage exceeds our entire squads budget, that Cork put out such a strong side, and that we kept it to 3 against a squad that in the last few seasons has beaten decent quality European opposition, I'd say they have a lot to be proud of.

    *Puts on harrased American accent:

Nah, a couple of things bugged me about last night but I suppose in hindsight what did I expect.

I thought making the first team play was punishment for the rubbish last Friday...

But maybe Alan just really wants to win something

The fact that we can't have Jimmy in goals every week.

Mike Kerley employing Carthy as a sort of midfield water carrier despite the fact that he is only just back from a fairly long lay off with injury.

The fact that some of our players just aren't good enough.

The sheer amount of time Cork City had on the ball in the middle of the park despite 4-5-1 being persisted with for the entire 90 minutes. I mean I realise they're better quality but try FFS.

The lads in the Derrynane giving out to lone striker Dave Ryan because he wasn't winning high ball against Dan Murray.

Probably one or two more little niggles but that's enough to go on for now.
