Hope he goes to Serie A, he has no pace but is technically sound and a good ball player, he'd be very suited to that league.

    Ian Harte

has BK got a dislike for Ian Harte especially with all the withdrawals and the good start he has had in Spain.............Surely having a player with his experience will give us more options...........

BK said he now has 20 players in the squad. If you're allowed 23 players why not use 23 players?

For example, bring Macken along for the experience. Alan Lee said on the FAI website this morning that he was intimidated even in training when he first joined the senior squad, but now he's been involved for a while he feels more at home.

It'd benefit Macken even if it's only to get to know the other lads better.

I think Harte, Dunne & Macken should all be involved even if they're not in Kerr's starting plans. Maybe Kerr's expecting Delap and Holland to join up after the Cyprus game.

Kerr's giving Harte time to settle in his new environment, nothing more than that. He'll be back for subsequent squads. It's a gamble, sure, but in the past Kerr has shown himself to be flexible with players' circumstances. Time will tell whether it's the right approach.

Fair point about Harte PP and maybe there are reasons behind Dunne's omission too, but would you agree about Macken?

I can just imagine the scene at Merrion Square, Fran Rooney to Brian Kerr:

"ah now c'mon Brian, no more call-ups, ye'd better start saving the cents, we've de rent at de new Lansdowne to be thinking of..."

Kerr never calls people up just for the sake of it. I don't think he likes peop,e there just to make up numbers & will only have people in squad if liekly to play them.

He won't call up young forward if he more likely to play midfielder or defender out of position when crunch time comes.

I noted your rather dismissive comment about McAteer on another thread - tell me, apart from the obvious, is there anyone that plays for Ireland that you actually do like/rate/respect?

Would be very useful from free kicks though a bit of a passanger at the back.

I would have him in ahead of Maybury any day.

    Completely unbiased opinion there.

And PP, if Duff or Keane had moved to Spain do you think they'd be left out of the squad so they could "settle". Not a chance. Kerr sees Harte for what he is, an average player who does not deserve to walk into every squad.

Ah, but you're talking about the backbone of our team and different characters altogether, hence different styles of man-management. I suppose results will judge, and I still place faith in Kerr to come good. Please God.

You're being maybe a little harsh on Harte, but that's fair enough. Mrs PP (looking over my sholder as I type) reckons he's only any good for dead-ball stuff anyway.

hi my first post here though i've read it for a while. i really enjoy some of the site. i'm not really ken foree.

right, re: harte, i think the fella has undoubted skill (in both feet, a rarity until recently with many players in ireland and england) but is obviously not blessed with pace. this makes his timing/judgement even more crucial. so sometimes he gets skinned.

thinking back a few years ago to the type of goal he was scoring for leeds - i think he had around a dozen one season - some were absolute corkers, from distance, with both feet, from open play. if anything, to me, he's a lost player for a lost position, somewhere in midfield perhaps (sad for him - defenders should always be quick). a pity. as an exiled droghedian, i'm not just a little biased!

anyway, peace to you all. hope we can enjoy the game tomorrow, wherever we are.

I don't think I'm as harsh on Harte as the many fans who think he should be taken out and shot. Personally I just think he is playing in the wrong positon.

How no Premiership or Irish manager has never realised that Harte's best position is left midfield is disturbing. He is crap at defending, but is a great passer of the ball, leathal from set pieces and is very comfortable on the ball. He is as slow as Christmas but at least in midfield that wouldn't result in defencive collapse. It doesn't take a genius to work out where he SHOULD be playing.
