Or how about the peculiarly English idea that there exists a country called "Southern Ireland"?
I presume Irish speakers use Eire...

Éire is a new term, usually Éireann/Éirinn (depending on what context) was used.
To be fair to the Brits we asked them to call us Éire, we called ourselves it, Article 4 of the Constitution. The official name of this country is Éire.
Oh no not them again
Here! Whats wrong with calling it that ya Westie!
I'd rather die laughing than trying!
As opposed to Eire, which means 'satires'. Important thing, after all, that li'l ol' fada ...Originally posted by SÓCcfc

The official name of this country is Éire.
I thought it was something like that the official name was the Republic of Ireland or, in the Irish language, Éire.
True cept that Irish is the first official language of the State, tis a real legal can of worms, a case sorted it all out recently, a fella got his drink driving conviction quashed because the law on drink driving had never been translated into Irish and since Irish is the first official language......end result of that was that students like me have to translate all the feicin Acts into Irish next year, and not get paid for it!!!!Originally posted by pineapple stu

Aoire is the Irish for Shepard?!
Republic of Ireland is Publacht (na h)Éireann.
Éire is the Constitutional name of the country whereas The Republic of Ireland is the official name....I'm pretty sure of it anyway.
And ther is a southern Ireland,A country separated from the rest.
It is THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CORK!!!!!!!!!
If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from?

Chun na fírinne a insint, 'eire' (gan an fada) = 'load, encumbrance' as Béarla....
Agus sin sin de chursaí spóirt...
