National cricket stadium planned for Malahide

10,000 seater in the pipeline, to be constructed in time for the ODI against Australia in 2010 if all goes to plan.

The interesting thing is that FingalCoCo were planning a 10,000-seater centre of excellence/stadium which Sporting Fingal would utilise and are also on-board with this idea. I wonder if the two projects are linked? It certainly seems ripe for an eL club.

i dont think Summer football and Cricket would mix well really unless they fenced off the wicket in the centre circle

They co-exist on lots of grounds in Australia, it would depend on the size of the outfield.

What are the chances of the local GAA wanting a piece of it?

Lets be realistic here, how often will a 10,000 seater cricket stadium be needed. A 5-6,000 one would be more sensible, maybe with some space for temporary stands if needed.

10,000 is about right for the flagship stadium of an association with any ambition. Australia and England will fill it and it opens up the possibility of further high profile domestic/international tournaments being staged there.

More likely it opens up the possibility of it becoming a concert venue. Good luck to them...

Cricket authorities are concert-phobic ever since a few major gigs in England in the seventies ruined the square at The Oval and elsewhere. Even if you keep the audience in the stands it's hard to avoid damage.

Where is the link to this?
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

The plan is for space for temporary seating to bring capacity up to 10,000 for that special occasion.
So your 5k permanent seat desired capacity might well be the plan.

'Deutrom is currently preparing a cost analysis of the project for Government examination. Should funding be granted, the club and governing body would seek planning permission from Fingal County Council to build a permanent structure with space set aside for temporary seating that would bring the capacity up to 10,000 for big games.'

Its 2008 now, Aussies here in 2010.
Very unlikely that u'd get through financial approval, design, planning, building and then seeding pitch (I'd imagine that cricket pitch takes alot longer to get right (like golf greens) and simply can't be rolled out (like recent champions league).

Only way it would be feasible if they are simply going to build stands adjacent to existing pitch. Would be feasible as fingal cc own the malahide castle grounds that are adjacent.

Old Trafford has been used fairly regularly the last few summers. REM and Radiohead ring a bell for this summer.
