Lansdowne shortlisted for UEFA Cup Final

    http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl...id=606219.html

Not for a couple of years yet but someone obviously believes the stadium will be finished in time.

The work on the underpass takes place this weekend so it does appear to be moving along.

That'll be fun. Wonder if it's the same delegation that were shown around the wonderful facilities in Abbotstown a few years ago.

To be fair, I think 2011 should be realistic and Delaney (if he can be believed ) has said that UEFA have promised the FAI a Cup Final soon after Lansdowne development is complete. What odds Rangers and/or an English team to make the final?

Looking at the plans, the new Lansdowne is a carbon copy of the Emirates and the new Stadium of Light in Lisbon( allbeit on 3 sides, the Northern end is a bit of a non event).First Croker, and now Lansdowne, 3 sided wonders.I'm aware of why this is the case, just a pity though.

I reckon he can come through on that one all right.
You can't spell failure without FAI

FAI have bid to hold 2011 UEFA Cup Final at Lansdowne Road. It has been shortlisted with:
    - Emirates Stadium, London
    - Arena Aufschalke, Gelsenkirchen
    - Olympic Stadium, Barcelona
    - Hamburg Arena, Germany
    - National Stadium Bucharest, Romania
from which the venues for both the 2010 and 2011 finals will be decided in March next year.

I'd be surprised if Landsdowne Road got chosen. Also how the **** are they able to judge it? Blueprints/plans aren't enough surely?

countries are usually awarded world cups, euro championships etc with some stadiums yet to be built. infrastructure, closeness of airports, security and spreading the finals around associate members is also considered

World Cups and Euros are very different to a one off game. Wembley bid for the 2008 and 2009 Champions League finals, even though the FA admitted it had no chance because it wasn't finished when the decision was taken. As the decision for 2010 and 2011 is next March, that would appear to go against Lansdowne. On the other hand, I can see the Emirates getting it as the UEFA cup final is in Manchester this season.

If I was to guess at this early stage I'd say:

2010: CL Wembley (shoe-in), UEFA Bucharest (don't know the stadium but assume it must be up to par to be shortlisted)
    2011: CL Bernabeu, UEFA Hamburg

I have been in the stadium in Bucharest it's a concrete Bowl open air on three sides and it has about 50,000 seats and a track around the field.

in the finest tradition of eastern european superbowls then? commie stadium architecture was designed to fit in thousands upon thousands of standing spectators with no regard for atmosphere, closeness to pitch, view etc (as long as the head honchos had good seats of course), so your comments are true for pretty much all pre-1990 stadiums in the old east.
    Superdave to the resc....

It has been demolished. Re-building work was supposed to began in June after finally receiving funding. It's due to re-open in mid 2009.
The fact that I cannot find any current status of the project doesn't bode well for it's chances.

Strange that 2 as-yet non-existent stadia are shortlisted. Other than that its a very England/Germany/Spain oriented list.

We were on the shortlist for Euro 2008 as well.

I'll believe it if I see it. Until then, I'll assume it's Delaney trying to score points and show how busy he was while the national team crumbled.
