After the turkey game
"I spoke to Martin O Neill and contrary to his recent comments, I never asked for a regular starting position."I did, however, disagree with certain aspects which out of respect to Martin and the national team will remain private."
That does sound a bit precious to me and I'd have little doubt that he would have been capped a number of times had he been determined to play and not put all his chips on those certain aspects which he had a disagreement with. At a guess I'd say the disagreement possibly had to do with making himself available for friendlies eg USA trip.
Yes that is a bafflingly cryptic statement to me, especially when Trapatoni was mentioned in other talk, I mean wtf the does it have to do with Trap?
Anyhow one thing is clear and that is that he won't be playing for Ireland which seems to be the norm these days.
Anyhow both Paul McShane and Kieran Clark are higher than him in the stats so far this season
Nothing cryptic in O'Neill's version of events here

For a guy who said he isn't going there.... he really went there.
Clear as muck.
Long winded way of saying he won't be playing for Ireland, perhaps.
Maybe he might reconsider his position if Palace drop him.
So basically O Neil can't guarantee Delaney won't be playing.
Damien: "Can you guarantee me you won't select me?".
Martin: "No I can't, I might select you".
Damien: "Well **** you then!!"
Martin: "Well **** you too, anyhow we won't need defenders when Grealish signs anyway."
Roy: "Calm down lads!!".

the42.ie saying Delaney should be called up in O'Shea's absence, especially with Clark and Wilson injured or not playing. Fair call, though I don't think Delaney has been starting recently himself.
Which makes it obvious: St Ledger has to start!
I wouldn't mind Delaney being called up but the media campaign is getting weird at this point. He's an OK player but he's no Stephen Ireland.
Wilson and Keogh have both played a decent few games in this campaign so I presume O'Neill will just go with them. If Fantasy Football is anything to go by (!), Ciaran Clark should be available for the weekend. The way Aston Villa have played since he's been dropped/injured he can't be far off getting back in the team either. I'd be happy enough with Wilson/Clark I think. That's probably our most obvious long term partnership post-JOSH anyway.
McShane's the man to bring Dzeko down to size.
I'm seeing Egan and Duffy as our long term solution. Mick would have capped them in 1996!
Did I say that? Did I mention Owen Garvan too?
Pardew and Scott Dann have suggested that Delaney would be open to a return. I'm not sure if an approach from O'Neill is too likely though or how well it would go down if there is one. This is the link but a subscription is required to read more.
And Dann's comments...

There must have been an easier way to say that !
