Pats programme editor asleep again !

Anyone notice in last nites programme that the City pen pictures (supplied by Gerry Desmond btw) were the same ones used in by Pats for the league game a few weeks ago ?

Appartently last night John O'flynn was "Absent tonight due to futher involvement with Don Given's squad" and Denis Behan is "likely to play as JOF is on Irealnd U21 duty in Longford".

After last season's fiasco you'd have thought that lessons would be learned.

Let's not make a meal of this again. OK, there was an unfortunate decision made last season to, em, borrow penpix from an unofficial website. That's done and dusted now, so let's just let it be.
We supplied penpix for the league game at Richer, but I was away on hols in the run-up to the LCSF and no new penpix were sent. Maybe the Pat's Ed was awaiting their arrival and made a late decision to run with what he already had from a (fairly) recent encounter...
Progs are often put together in difficult circumstances as 'professionalism' will be a long time winding its way down to most clubs' attitudes to their match programmes - unfortunately (no slight intended there to the Pats prog, btw, which I thought was of a very high standard).
Sure, it might have been spotted and then edited out but it's hardly a hanging offence. It was probably just an oversight, these things happen.
St Pats are among the few clubs in the Premier Division, indeed in the whole country, who are most obliging when it comes to supplying penpix or information and I would like to record my gratitude publicly for all their help in the past. We on City Edition are very appreciative of their co-operation. As a general rule of thumb, gleaned over several years of programme involvement, the Dublin clubs are the best to deal with while most 'provincial' clubs are little short of disastrous when it comes to requesting assistance...We regularly supply to stuff to our fellow non-Palers and get practically zip in return, as exampled by our most recent home league game.

Pats programme did seem to be put together in a hurry as numerous errors in names of contributers & column writers.

Fair points and well made Doine.
As you say Pats programme is one of the best around. However the old saying "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me comes to mind"

Ah, Yiddo - give them a break.

You'd have to know the problems dealing with clubs and the 'official' footie scene to appreciate how easily things can go haywire. I agree, prog eds have to assume responsibility, but there's a certain amount of the production that's always out of your control just simply due to the circumstances involved. That's diminished responsibilty IMO.

Anyway, we've made bloopers occasionally on City Edition , but then so have the Irish Times, The New York Times or any other publication you mught care to mention.

Progs are generally put together by enthusiaists and it's worth comparing current league progs to those of twenty or even 10 years ago to see how far they have come along. Wish the same could always be said about the football...!

The programme was rubbish!
Poor quality, very general content which could be used for anything and not a mention about the actual game.
Nothing about extra-time, golden goal or pens.
Ok so most of us figured it out but that's no excuse for not giving details. We always talking about getting new fans but what would they get from such a poor quality publication?
I always keep match programmes but I'm sure I left this one in Copper Face Jacks.
Couldn't care less really, nothing in it worth keeping.

I've yet to see a eL programme as good as the CCFC one.
Even the fanzines don't make stupid mistakes like putting in penpix calling a player a (whatever it was they called Decky Daly!).

I don't think there would be much between Cork's and Rovers for top honours. Not a huge fan of ours but it is well presented and at 2 euro, good value for money.

And forget the other thing, its not like it was the pats guy's opinions... it was Scotty's (if I'm not mistaken) and it was just laziness not to check properly. That person isn't there anymore...

Monday night and Dublin was like a ghost town but once you get to Coppers it's like a Saturday.

Almost as ruthless as life of a journalist on Fleet street.

You still have to hand it to some of the guys who do give a lot of time and effort for no reward, thankless job.

Flannerys and Coppers are the only two places in Dublin that are jammed on a Monday night. I actually met 2 city fans in there monday night so had a good chat with them, before moving on to someone more pleasing on the eye.......

I dunno, I think thats one of the great features of the city programme is that you're likely to find an article on something to do with Irish football that you're unlikely to see elsewhere; whether its city related or not. Some very out of the way topics covered, and I think its excellent. besides, there's only so much you can do on the one game! I do think that player interviews would be a good idea though- give the fans a chance to kinda get to know the players

Like, I wish...we're talking League of Ireland clubs here - do you honestly believe they can AFFORD to appoint fulltime programme editors? I wish...keeping the day job, however!

Don't accept that the Brazil article was 'awful', not at all. I can accept if you feel it was inappropriate in YOUR opinion. In my view it was a very important occasion in Irish Football and it was the 30th anniversary of the match.
Initially that article was to run over 2 issues as we were supposed to have back-to-backs with Longford and Rovers. Anyway, if you read the article, you should have realised that 'Rovers' did not play Brazil but rather the name was used as a flag of convenience at the last minute to get over a lot of political problems. Like, there were NO Rovers players actually on the team.

Interviews are planned for the remainder of the season, hopefully starting with the Cup game v Shelbourne. There were time factors involved with not including player interviews up to this point. (The prog at this level is gobbling up time...)

Finally, what is so wrong with having an article on the visiting team in the programme? In the past, Rovers themselves have carried City-related topics in theirs...Would you not like to see a City article in an away programme?

We need to chill at little on certain issues, IMO.

I thought the Rovers v Brazil article was very interesting. The program in general has been excellent this season.

I thought the piece on the Brazil game was very good. (Maybe because I'm old enough to remember watching the game on TV

In the prog for the UCD game there was also a good piece on UCD's place in the league. Surely people can't object to a couple of non City related pieces in the programme ?

Regarding the interviews with players this would also be welcome but should concentrate on a players career/ life prior to arriving at City. If you you start asking most guys about the current set up theres a danger of going down the road of Shoot and english premiership programmes. eg "I know I was sh*t last year but I've really knuckled down in training now and am raring to go" etc. or "I don't mind sitting on the bench as long as the team wins". I'd prefer to hear about a guys early career in here or England. How they ended up playing in their position etc.

Finally I think a piece on the opposition in the programme is essential.
