Probably. The crowds were always going to drop as the season went on, and especially as Euro 2008 kicked in. The former has happened every year we've done this thread; the latter happened in the 2006 World Cup. There is no panacea for football in Ireland; crowds under 2000 at Pat's and Drogheda despite recent successes in particular highlight this. We're not on the verge of average crowds of 4000 here. You can be disappointed about it I suppose, but it's the league we're in.

In the list of all the attendances the attendance for cobh-drogheda is missing, that's what he's on about.

I have 1100 in for that one; must have left it in there by mistake. Cheers.

There was another 75 to 100 in the stand I'd say.

Sadly this does seem to be the case. It's very frustrating, but it seems to me that crowds were higher ten years ago. You'd wonder what clubs have to do. It certainly gives the lie to the argument that it's about standards. The standard of play, and quality of players in the league has probably never been higher, yet crowds seem to be falling rather than rising.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

I'd say that the increase in Premier League matches on Sky and Setanta could be playing a role. There is usually between 4-6 matches live every weekend now as opposed to maybe 1 in years gone by. They've also increased the showing of Championship, Coca Cola leagues and La Liga. Still, you would hope that there could be a role for both this and EL on a Friday.

The ONLY thing that could change the embarrassingly low attendances in this country is the (near miracle) of an Irish team qualifying for the Champions League groups stages. This can't be said enough. It's still an absurdity that Dublin dosen't have a team who can achieve this when you see cities like Eindhoven, Valencia, Prague (eg similarly sized, or even smaller, cities) regularly appearing in the latter stages. But it boils down to the lack of imagination and docile mindset of the typical Irish sports 'fan'. It's been said here a million times - the mindless 'barstooler' with his misplaced allegiances to teams in Britain is the one to blame.

    .
Yes, but those cites you mention only have one or at the most two professinal football clubs where Dublin (similar population) has 6 semi-pro/pro clubs. In those European countries you mention the whole city supports one club but in Ireland there is a small population outside of Dublin and there is 6 clubs in the capital and also as you mentioned the rivalry of the English League, but I think that is just an excuse.

Either way you were closer to the actual figure than I was

(and the 'official' figure was way off)

What's your capacity restricted to now? That's a terrible crowd for such a big game.

I thought about 800, but I don't know the place that well - 50 of us at most

Was it that big? Drogheda were out of the title chase even before that game.

Football fans are optimistic; a win would have seen Drogs right back in it (in their fans' eyes). One point off them and challenging for the UEFA Cup spots. It was really the last chance to save the season*, and as such arguably a bigger game than usual. Plus I assume Derry brought a decent crowd. Going by the figures here, that's their worst crowd of the season, which is very surprising.

    * - watch as they win every game from here to the end now.
