Anyone feel an earthquake about 15 minutes ago?
That was pretty scarey.
No I am in Nottingham, it has been on Sky News and Radio 5 live, said felt in
Leicester, Bedfordshire and Norfolk. Also I was playing poker online and players from Birmingham, Kent and Hull felt it.
It was pretty scary, I would say it was fairly big, I have never felt one at all before. There was like a really big up movement too, I could feel the sofa pressing hard on my arse!!
4.7 on richter scale I just heard on the radio.
If the movement is side to side, there's nothing to worry about. If it's up and down, you're screwed. That's what people say here anyway.
I've experienced literally hundreds here, but most of them are tiny shakes lasting just a few seconds. Only once or twice have I actually started to really worry.
Yeah, a bunch of my mates in England started texting and messaging me. I didn't feel a thing, which as odd as it appears the epicentre was in Lancashire (where it was pretty dramatic) and people as far south as London felt it.

Termonbarry Athletic TID!
It's was like rumbling at first and I though there was a train going past (I live
near a train line) it sounded like that but then I realised no train was that big!!
I could feel the sofa wobbling from side to side and could see things in the room
shaking from side, then I felt a kind of big up lift, I could feel the sofa pressing
hard into my arse!! But I guess a down movement would feel the same.
Then there was more rumbling and I was worried my monitor
was going to fall off the the top of the computer on which it is perched!!
Then it calmed down, I had been playing poker but it put me right off my game!!
It was quite scary and I considered vacating the house at one point!!
A 'real' one must be terrifying.

Yup. Thought that there was something up alright. Lasted about 15 seconds or so, thought that I was about to encounter a serious blood pressure prob as I thought I was shaking of my own accord. Hardly more than a bare shaking here in London though.
Ironically, Tuesday last week I was teaching some uni kids about risk assessment and mentioned that earthquakes were something that we have to consider here, but ultimately discount as they are generally negligible. There was a smirk or two when I said earthquakes can hit England. I'm going to find that class tomorrow and go in and be a God.
That or have then say "But you said it was negligible"...
That question was less stupid, though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.
Help me, Arthur Murphy, you're my only hope!

Witness from BBC reports it as "very strong", meaning; I was in my sitting room and the grandfather clock was rattling rather violently.
So one for the unaccustomed participants and the media to get excited over more so than the scientists I guess. I'd say I'd probably freak out a little bit alright. What would be the worst thing to be doing when one struck?
You mean you're not revered at present?

A EARTHQUAKE ROCKS UK:
A major earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit in the early hours of yesterday morning, with the epicentre in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.
The earthquake decimated the area causing approximately £50 worth of damage.
Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed.
Many locals were woken well before their welfare cheques arrived. one resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying.
My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Jerry Springer the next morning".
Apparently though, looting, muggings and car crime carried on as normal.
The Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Spam and 70,000 bottles of Stella to the area to help the stricken locals.
Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, which include benefit books, Burberry Clothing ,
jewellery from Argus and bone china from Tesco.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing, parcels for those unfortunate to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after.
Items most needed include: baseball caps, hoodies , flannelette shirts, thongs and tracksuits.
Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs include, Chips, McDonalds, KFC, ice cream and cans of Stella or Bacardi Breezers.
If you would prefer to donate money, 25p buys a biro for filling in
compensation forms; £5.00 buys chips, battered fish, crisps and fizzy drinks for a family of 9; £10.00 will pay for a packet of Superkings and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.
PLEASE do not send tents for shelter, as the sight of posh housing is unfair on the population of the neighbouring areas
