Anyone know when the pub-closed rule officially originated? Was legislation passed or is it just implicitly understood?

According to Encyclopaedia Brittanica; "As early as the 2nd century Good Friday was kept by Christians as a day of penance and fasting." So there has long been a culture of denial on the day, but I'm just wondering how/when it came about that pubs can't/don't open. Why alcohol? Why not cakes?

If you read what I said properly you will see I dont care what anyone does or doesn't drink. I just wish the law wasnt there as we could make a killing on the bar. Its always our big crowd games that get hit somehow!!

Would MUFC not change the Good Friday game to the Saturday so that they could make their bar profit?

Seems like a no brainer for the outside observer to be honest.

But there is a plus to it being on GF. None of our security guys are working in the pubs that they work at so we can have loads of stewarts there to make sure the bigger crowd are well looked after. So think that is why it will go ahead. Anyway there is feck all else to do on GF so at least there is football!

I've said it manys a time.

    Over-Rated rubbish.

Maybe it's just our sophisticated Limerick palettes*

*Yes I know there's at least one word spelt wrong here so no need for anyone to point it out

In fairness id prefer a packet of bacon fries, sure that fella that used to do the hot-dogs in Jackman Park a few years back did nicer dogs.

Why they are on par with the St Lukes youth group! anyway, if people are unable to go a day without drink (and make excuses for it) then id have to worry about peoples mental state.

If people think its alright for their modern day democratic government to tell them what legal goods they can or cannot consume on a arbitrary, generic day based upon some previously held deep regret for the death of some judean wood peddler millennia ago (despite said peddler being apparently entirely aware of and fully able to prevent said death) then id have to worry about people's mental state.

Go to the off-licence the day before then if you cant go a day without the sweet amber hooked to your brain, most bladder heads do this anyway.

Right, so what do people generally do, in protest of a law?
