Spot on. If God existed he wouldn't ever allow pubs to close.

You can get a drink at the dog show in the RDS. Brendan Behan had a great story about that. He used to go there as it was one of the only watering hole on good friday, he was carrying a few pints of guinness across the floor when he tripped over a dog and spilt all the drink, not one to be made look silly he quippe " who let that f_ing the dog in ". Brilliant.

Are the bars at train stations open for Good Friday?

Holy thursday is really weird the country goes mental, when i worked in an off licence it was the 2nd busiest day just behind xmas eve. You cant drink for just 1 day on good friday a day where most people still work so its really only one night that you cant get a pint and everyone panic’s. People would come in and buy 3,4 or even 5 slabs of beer. Its like they are stocking up for the apocalypse

    It is strange indeed.

Bars could make a fortune on Good Friday too.

I'm not religious, it's annoying that life could be influenced by the religious type (it's the same up here on Sundays too, religious people dictate the hours we can shop.)

They are. Thats why in previous years, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne and Dundalk fans have all stopped in Culloville on the way to our games to buy some beverages on a Good Friday.

Are you only not supposed to drink on Good Friday the same way you are not supposed to eat meat or does everywhere just stop selling alcohol? Don't see them stop selling meat for the day...

I think its a hang-over from the days when the Church effectively ran the country - a byproduct of which involved the closure of pubs on Good Friday.

Good Friday - the one day of the year where Lounge Lizards, Bar Flies and Stool Pigeons are banished from the warmth of the Snug into the wild for one tortuous day.

This happens every year and the DSPCA turns a blind eye.

The anti-happiness league were particularly strong on Good Friday. You were expected to be bored to death and delighted to be so - or else you were going to Hell.

Can anyone else remember a more boring day as Good Friday when you were a child? Even as recently as the early 80's - the country effectively shut down for the day.

As was customary, people rose in the morning and "did the stations". To your horror, you'd soon realise there was even less on the telly as usual and would return to bed - most likely dreaming of the days when you could go to the pub.

As a child, playing football was usually the answer to everything - so you'd try and round up enough to play a game. Sadly, most would be away visiting Auntie Bridie or Sr Candida on Good Friday.

Defeated - you'd resign yourself to the overwhelming torpor of Bad Friday.

I am heading to Belfast myself this Friday - Pubs will be open but not during the day, normally at around 5 or 6 in the evening

The whole thing of closing bars on Good Friday does seem a bit out dated but to be fair its only 1 day...just buy cans the night before or get doubly drunk on Saturday to compensate!

    ????????
    Do you not live here?
Bar the very few already stated exceptions, the pubs and off licences are shut everywhere, it's the law. Good Friday and Christmas Day are the only two days in the year that they are. Our Northern brethren get a few hours drinking on Christmas Day too, or at least they do on the big island anyway.

True, 1 day won't kill me but I'd like to choose that day myself (rather than be dictated to by the clergy of a religion I don't belong to) and I would never ever pick a friday ffs
I might pick a half day on a tuesday in january and another half day on a monday in October.

Yep, we apparently live in the "Free World" (the West) after all.

I know all that, just wondering are we not supposed to drink because of the holy thing (like meat) or do the pubs, off licenses etc just have to stupidly close.

Thursday night is ladies night at my local. Makes for a good Friday.
Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.
