Left out of the squad following Dougie Freedman's sacking - seems he was viewed as one of the manager's pet players. Joe Mason also omitted, strangely.

Who would've thought his career would have ended up like this after his return from injury in the 2012/13 season coincided with Palace putting a run together to secure promotion?

He was a pivotal player for them.

Now he is a figure of derision, for fans of Palace, Millwall & Bolton.

Playing in the U-21's every week, there wasn't a peep about him signing for a team during the loan window.

What happened to Ipswich's FA Youth Cup winning team of 2005?

    http://talksport.com/football/chelse...nners-10-years

Shane Supple: The Irish 'keeper played for Ipswich’s first team but retired aged 22 because, in his own words, he ‘fell out of love with football’, and returned home to Ireland where he is now a decent Gaelic footballer – he’s a goalkeeper, of course. Roy Keane (then Ipswich manager) details in his book the conversation when Supple told him he was quitting. “He didn’t love the game any more. And he said he didn’t want to work with people who didn’t care if they won or lost. I think it was the whole industry he disliked. I admired him for it. I think he was going back to become a Garda – a policeman – so I thought to myself: ‘I’d better keep onside with Shane.’”

Michael Synott: The Irish defender had to have an operation on his ankle not long after the Youth Cup final and, despite being awarded a professional contract at Town, never really recovered. He went on trial at York City, but ended up back home in Ireland playing for Dundalk, then Shelbourne. He was in the same Sixth Form as Sheringham and Trotter (see below).

Cathal Lordan: A stand-out player from that Youth Cup final, he scored both goals in the 2-2 first leg draw at St Mary's. An attacking midfielder who you felt would go on to do big things – but injuries got in the way. He ended up back in his native Ireland with Cork City.

Owen Garvan: A very talented midfielder who fell out of favour with Roy Keane (sounds like a theme), and was allowed to join Crystal Palace. At the time, although fit, he had not been included in the first team squad by Keane for 18 consecutive games. But the fans loved Garvan. Keane said at the time: “Every fan has his or her favourite and those they have a soft spot for and Owen may be that player for many of our supporters. But he is not doing enough right now to get into the first team. Yes, he has talent, but talent counts for only 5% of what is needed to be a success as a professional footballer.” Garvan played in Palace’s play-off final win over Watford which saw them promoted from the Championship, but he then fell out with Ian Holloway when he was omitted from Palace’s 25-man Premier League squad. Garvan tweeted: “I’ll be here longer than he will…trust me.” Garvan is still a Palace player so he’s technically correct. But Holloway questioned his attitude, next boss Tony Pulis was having none of him, he went on loan to Millwall (according to my Millwall-supporting producer George, however, he had only one good game), and a subsequent loan spell at Bolton was notable only for a missed penalty in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves. Right now, Garvan is in the football wilderness waiting for his Palace contract to end, which is a shame because he is a player with undoubted talent.

I remember the excitement about that bunch of players. Further evidence of how the lack of a better funded domestic top flight fails our more promising players and our national team.

That said, I still have high hopes for Garvan.

Really? Why do you say that?

I've fairly much given up on him to a Keith Treacy level at this stage. It's a LONG time since he was linked with Everton....

He is a bit of hate figure for Bolton fans, which I think is a bit harsh considering he was sorely lacking in match practice at that level of competitiveness.

Crystal Palace fans were pretty quick to write him off considering how much he contributed to their promotion.

Owen Garvan's stock has fallen so low that he is/was on trial with MK Dons in Dublin.

    http://citiblogmk.co.uk/2015/07/13/t...ason-friendly/

What happened to this guy? He was instrumental in Palace getting promoted to the Premier League.

They will be able to put out a starting 11 of Irish players at this rate.

Better than nothing I suppose but he's surely capable of at least playing for a team at the other end of League One.

I didn't realise he's only 27! Seems to have been around forever. Never really delivered on his potential, and the closest he's come to a full Ireland cap was in a B international.

Yeah he was motoring very well just two years ago, helping Palace back to the PL and even starting the first couple of games in the top flight. Then the sh!t seem to hit the fan between himself and Holloway when he was dropped from the squad altogether. He's definitely better than a relegation scrap in League One I'd have thought but at least he'll be playing some football.

It's a short term contract, so you'd hope his plan is to play well in League One, and maybe attract some Championship attention in January?

Said I'd divert this one here. Garvan is playing regularly with Colchester in League One. His contract was initially until January but it has been extended until the summer of 2017. He came off injured at the weekend.

    There's a shock
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Yeah very fragile! Positive words from his manager though, hopefully the injury isn't anything major.

I didn't think we could get that channel over here but I googled it after you posted this. Turns out we can add it to 'Other Channels' on Sky. I tuned it in and the first thing I saw was Garvan's first goal for Colchester, a lovely strike in a 4-4 draw with Walsall. Can't record the channel though which is a bit of a balls.

Delorean you are a true fan. I don't think you get enough credit.

As for the delorean.....it was predicted in Back to the Future II that the Cubs would win the World Series in the year 2015. The whole cast has been meeting all over lately. Must be something to sell.
Well, the Cubs lost this week to the Mets. But that was close. I mean they won 97 games. And for all you finest of fine Irish, if the Mets do win it....come here. That parade will be crazy. The Mets are an Irish type team. Murphy...with his 6 home runs in 6 games. Please.
No Somos muchos pero estamos locos.
