New record label - free downloads

Don't worry Mods, the following is all above board.

Seeing that the people who frequent this forum are both music lovers and tighter than a duck's whatsit, this should be right up your street. Yes Radiohead were the first high profile band to do it, but long before and after their release people have been offering their music for free.

Records on Ribs is a new label, with a similar concept - download the releases under a Creative Commons licence. If you like it, you can always make a paypal donation. Simple really.

The label is a month old, and already has ten releases, with more to follow.

My new favourite album of the week is We Show Up On RadaR - Growing A Girl (Instructions On How To Grow A Girl Without Your Wife Finding Out)

From the press release: "Syd Barrett does indie pop: songs about animals and their sports days, the sun with his hat on and wanting to be a car. Not to forget ruminations on turbulent personal relationships, melancholia and mortality."

In other free music news, long forgotten early '90s band See See Rider (remember them? didn't think so) have made their two EPs and unreleased debut album available for download. They're described as a crossover between late eighties indie and early nineties shoegazing. Click here for more.

The new album by The Charlatans will also be available firstly as a free download from 3rd March, before going on sale as CD and vinyl later that month.
