He should be the guest of honour for the Paddys day celebrations. that would be a great birthday for him.

Just watchin sky sports news now. they say he conducted an interview with the reporter in english although a little broken. he was approached by the FAI 10 days ago. He says that Ireland is made up of a squad of 1st division players ( I take it he means premier ) and that there is absolutely no reason Ireland cant qualify. The date he will take the post has still yet to be clarified and SSN are saying he may not take the position in time for the Serbia friendly.

    Would you believe that?

He seems to know a fair bit about the players already from what ive heard.

That seems to back up the article in the Times. I'm over the moon. No more work for me today.

According to the Sunday Times it was Brady that first approached him.

bloody hell I'm actually excited by the upcoming campaign now....will be great to see what this bunch of players can do with a real manager in charge!!

2 year contract - was it only on 2 year contracts that the other previous managers were signed? I can't remember

Delighted, happier then I've been with the Irish set up in a long long time.

Can't believe the FAI didn't take Salzburg's press conference into consideration when planning their own, reckon Salzburg have announced it like this as a little dig given that they weren't impressed by the manner Trap was approached?

    Really chuffed!

Staunton was four if I'm not mistaken. Kerr's was until after the France match in 2005.

The only disappointment I have with this is that he will see out his contract. I would have liked a friendly in March to give him more time to work with the team. It's not really a major concern though, given the calibre of the candidate was more than we could have ever really asked for.
My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method, is love. I love you Sheriff Truman.

Well, not since Richard Dunne slimmed down.

    Happy days indeed!

2 years is right for us. If he's a success and someone else wanted him (e.g. England!) a four year contact wouldnt keep him. On the off chance he's a failure then we wont have to pay off a lengthy expensive contract. (Good to see a lesson learned from Stan)

What's this about maybe not being there for Serbia. Don't they finsish in April and then the Serbia game is in May.

Anyway, as good a piece of news as I've heard for a long long time.

I said in a previous post that i wasn't pushed on him. I honestly didn't think that the FAI could pull something off like this. But I have to admit I'm really looking forward to the next campaign. If he can keep it tight at the back I wouldn't mind winning 1-0 all the time. We where never a team that thumped teams anyway. We could have a 100 chances and still only score a few.

Caught a bit of Trap on telly there training the Salzburg team and he looked fairly lively and animated as he put them though their paces. Don't think age will be a factor with this guy.

    Salzburg confirm Trapattoni's departure
    Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:57
Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg have confirmed that Giovanni Trapattoni will leave them at the end of the season to become Republic of Ireland manager.

The Italian is set to be announced at a conference at the FAI Headquarters in Abbotstown this evening.

The former Juventus, Bayern Munich and Benfica boss has confirmed to RTÉ News that he was approached by the FAI ten days ago.

And he has also revealed that the less time-consuming nature of international management tempted him to accept their offer.

'I'm interested in the Irish job because it will give me more time with my family,' he said.

'Yesterday my solicitor came to an agreement with the FAI, so I have accepted.'

Trapattoni is confident that he can help Salzburg retain the Austrian Bundesliga title that they won convincingly last season.

It has also emerged that the former Italian national coach consulted Liam Brady, who is expected to be included in Trappatoni's backroom team, about the position.

"When the national team asked me I called and asked Liam 'what do you think?'"

"He said 'I think it's a good team'."

Trapattoni said that he asked Brady to work with him.

He added that it is too early to say whether or not he would be in place for the Republic's friendly clash with Serbia in May, saying it was at his present employers' discretion.

    From Red Star Salzburg website:

Giovanni Trapattoni has made a decision on his future just before the 2007/2008 T-Mobile Bundesliga resumes after the winter break: The ‘Mister’ is to take on the job of Irish national team manager after the end of the season - for a two-years contract.
Until then the highly successful 68-year-old coach will be fully concentrated on the final 13 matches of the Austrian season as the Bulls seek to successfully defend their title.

Exactly, how I called it. At his age, I think this appointment is perfect for both us and him.

Is he the first Ireland manager with a good C.V in management? As previous managers didnt really have much experience i.e from Jack onwards.

About the best we could have hoped for given the alternatives.

Delighted with the appointment and just hope the players can respond now.
