There is a good chance Trapatonni knows exactly what he is doing the last few days re airing his views on certain players. He was never going to play McCarthy against Macedonia. Wilson has been down the pecking order when available and again was unlikely to start against Macedonia (even with all the injuries, suspension at the back). Same goes for Folan and possibly Walters. Big up the Wolves players and the likes of Cox. Get the squad who do turn up ready for the big one next week. Quite clever really.

I'm not sure it's as calculated as that Noely.

However, I was at a talk by Clive Woodward a few years back and he was talking about how he picked his 30(?) man squad for WC 2003. He said he left some better players out in favour of having 30 positively minded, team spirited players out there. His view was that having just one "termite" in the camp with a moaning attitude could be enough to bring the whole house down.

Remember when Jack said he regretted taking Frank Stapleton to Italy over Gary Waddock? Frank just moaned and whinged the whole time.

If Trap is picking a squad of committed players who won't have hissy fits over whether they play or where they're asked to play, then that's fine by me. Andy Keogh and Paul McShane, for all our criticisms of them, are probably good lads to have around. Their commitment is undoubted. Cox's noises have been very encouraging. Ward's interview in the Herald last month was great. And so on...

Pretty damning stuff here from Dion Fanning claiming that Trap didn't even know Harte is Irish

That is shocking if true but I'd find that incredibly hard to believe. Fanning has had an anti Trap agenda ever since his massive cheerleading for Venables to be given the job came to naught...

Tardelli was asked about Harte last month,
"Ian Harte is a good player, he's got good quality, but we have young players with the same qualities. We look for the future."

Jack got us to three Finals (including our first ever after years in the wilderness) and did reasonably well at them all. No comparison as yet.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Wasn't he given it after Italia '90?

Wasn't trying to be an ass about it. Just think it's a silly comment to make regarding Trap. Sure if we get quarter finals or semi-finals of Euros and qualify for WC next time, I'm all for it. Mentioning it now though?

According to Darragh Maloney on Premiership, sunday papers are reporting Trap's new contract has been agreed in principle, but not signed yet. Salary down to 1.5m/yr

    Well he deserves it.

I've been a (mild) critic in the past of the style and reliance on the long ball but if we keep getting results then I cannot really grumble. Onwards and upwards.

I don't think anyone could argue he's undeserving of a new contract. I'll admit, I've also been critical of the style and thought we were pushing our luck at times, but you can't argue with the progress we've made since Trap has taken over. If we're consistently "lucky", then it's probably fair to attribute that more to something else than just "luck".

We're very lucky to have him. Given his age when he was appointed, I assumed we'd have him to steady the ship for one campaign at worst, or even to create a miracle and qualify at best. To have a manager of his calibre for three campaigns is fantastic. In a way it would have been easy for him to go out on a high after to Euros but he obviously really likes being our manager which is great.

Agree with everything said by DeLorean. Great to have him on board for WC2014 campaign. It's a tricky group but Trap is the man to guide us through it.

Good news, glad to hear it.

Michael D. and Trap are the men to lead us forward. If Lord of the Rings taught us anything, it's that old, white-haired geezers know their s**t.
