Mike Newell was appointed manager of Luton today.

On the subject of Mike Newell, does anyone remember that Spillane had an "exclusive" about 5 years ago that Newell was signing for City. Some things never change!

    typical spillane exclusive.
Kinnear must be fairly annoyed seeing as the board, players and season ticket holders all wanted him in. he only lost by four votes in the end.

    No Luton return for Kinnear

Joe Kinnear will NOT be returning to Luton Town after Mike Newell – his only rival for the position – came out on top in a unique election over the weekend, the results of which were announced today (Monday).

Kinnear, Newell and former Sunderland assistant boss Steve Cotterill were all shortlisted for the telephone vote, but Cotterill made it clear that he would not be in the running for the job, leaving it between Newell and Kinnear, who was sacked from the position a month ago.

Former Wimbledon boss Kinnear had been expected to win the election after Luton’s designate chief executive John Gurney admitted that he was leading the way in the poll.

But, when all the votes were tallied, Newell won the day on the tightest of possible majorities. The players and the club season ticket holders both voted for Kinnear, while the new board and the shareholders came out on the side of Newell.

That left the poll conducted for the general fans holding the casting vote – and Newell came out on top by a margin of just FOUR votes.

The poll result brings to an end an arduous time at the club, with Newell set to take over the manager’s position later this week. A former Luton player, he had been dismissed by Hartlepool United at the end of last season, despite leading them to promotion from Division Three. Hartlepool had been clear leaders of the division when he took over from the departed Chris Turner in mid-season.
