Norway Away - 20th August 2008

FAI just announced away friendly on 20th August in Oslo against Norway

**** get ready for 10 euro a pint. More in for the Norwegians than us as they are drawn against Scotland but at least its an away friendly.

10 euros pint - and I thought Paris was bad?!!!!

My mates didn't go to japan because they heard the stories about expensive beer, thinking the trip would bankrupt them. It was about 10 euros a pint there too. However my 5 star hotel in central Roppongi with a great breakfast, swimmng pool and gym was only about 70 euros a night for an enormous double room and my flight was about 500 euros. Food was ridiculously cheap. I've never had such luxury at an "away" match or matches. I figured I could only drink about 6-7 pints a day on average over 14 consecutive days so that was 30 euros a day "too much" for beer but at least that much cheaper for everything else.

Lesson: don't let expensive grog turn you off an away trip!

Oh if it was a World Cup I woudl be there in a shot but an awa friendly in August before more than likely a double header in Sept I could have done with a nice cheap place. I will probably still go anyway.

I was drinking in Japanese gaffs and the beer was €6-7 a pint of Kirin, Asahi or Sapporo. If you like Japanese food, its cheap (especially if you ate at those noodle bars). And the hotels in Tokyo were often less than €60 if sharing. Oh, and don't drink coffee for three weeks.

Japan is supposedly a rip off, but if you accomodate, it isn't that bad. Not so Iceland. Everything is expensive. Sh*te Icelandic p*ss (predictably called Viking) is almost €10. Takeaway's are ridiculously expensive, although Dublin isn't far behind. I'd imagine Norway the same. I was there in 1984 and it was €6 a pint then when it was about €1.50 in Ireland (although a lot cheaper in supermarkets). Accomodation was also expensive.

Most countries play teams in friendlies from roughly the same area as their next competitive match. It turns out that all our trips are long haul treks to South/Eastern Europe, so where do we go to play a friendly....

Norway have Scotland in their group so I presume the wanted the game
against us.

It'll deffo be a cheap and chearful trip seeing as there could be a Sept
away double header ... and if booze is that expensive imight have to
bring the "good book" to the pub ... and probably the match!!!!

I'm aware who Norway have, but I'm looking at the match from our point of view. What we'll learn from playing Norway, I've no idea.

Well, it's either :

1 - Give and take (we have Serbia, which is "a bit like Montenegro" ( © Mark Lawrenson ) so therefore, as far as the FAI are concerned, are also hopefully "a bit like Georgia" )- so we can hawk ourselves around a bit to any takers - hello Norway! - to vary the challenges.

2 - Someone in the FAI is of the opinion that Norway are "a bit like Bulgaria"

Probably a similar number to that which went to Aarhus last year, 300-400.
Given there will be a trip in Sep or even a doule header this will limit numbers to the real hard core with possible more money than sense
Aarhus was one of the best trips in a long time, lovely pub called Tir Na Nog much nicer than Bratislava and the steroid addicted bouncers

Ryanair €66 return and SAS €130 approx return for flights to Oslo.

The Friendly V Denmark turned out to be a pretty cheap trip last summer, cheap drink near the ground, cheap taxi's, cheap enough digs, I'd say this one won't be a great deal differant.

Flights look fair enough also.

Be alert to where Ryanair fly to in 'Oslo'

This from their own website: Sandefjord Torp Airport is approximately 140 Km from the city of Oslo. There is no rail connection to the city. There is a bus service, operated by Torpexpressenfrom that is located outside the terminal building. Journey tiem is approximately 1hr 45 minutes; cost is 130 NOK.

140 clicks is almost 90 miles away and costing €33 return by bus does not look that attractive.

Point taken, however Oslo City Airport appears to be 60km from Oslo City Centre! Asuming the Radisson Oslo Airport Hotel is close to the airport. Also assuming you are out of Torp in 15 mins which is the norm for a lot of Ryanair secondary type airports you could be at your hotel in about 2.5 hrs which is not muh more than taking 45 mins to get out of the City airport and another 1hr - 1hr 30 mins to travel the 60km or so to the city centre. SAS do fly direct so its down to a preference and flight times i suppose

There is an express (and it is fast!) train to/from the city centre from the Oslo main airport, takes about 20 minutes and cost about 20 euro each way.

Thanks, havent booked yet, im aware a fair few lads are already booked on SAS out Tues back Thurs. Just waiting to see if we have a double header in Sept, if so may just do out Weds back thurs, but would pprefer to do 3 nights and actually see the place.

Last time there was a group of Irish supporters in Norway for an international was for the Faroes game on a slight diversion, they had great fun I believe even if they only saw the inside of an airport while refuelling before heading back to Dublin to watch the game in a local pub

I am into the second week of my annual January detox ( no alcohol for the month)...........so now with this fixture I will have something "worthwhile" to invest all the money I save
