The man is an imbecile, and a joke. No football club would ever touch him unless he did a Roddy and promised to bring in investors. That lost one in twelve games line shows what a fool Staunton is, how people can still defend him I don't know.

    Stan on Trapattoni:
"What's his knowledge of the Irish players? How well does he know how the Irish players feel and what they're all about because I think we are a little bit different."

    Who has defended him?
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Perhaps defend wasn't the right choice of word, but I've no time for the "well he's a lovely guy and did his best but it wasn't up to it" arguments.

    Pool old Steve.

He should have never been put in this position in the first place

In a way I felt sorry for him having been thrown to the wolves by Delaney but having seen his display on TV yesterday I now feel nothing but rage.

Rage at Delaney for giving the man the job. Staunton came across yesterday as a mentally subnormal twit with no grasp on reality whatsoever. Even his live match analysis was cringeworthy. How on earth could Delaney have thought he could engineer a successful campaign and be trusted with the development of future players?

Rage towards Staunton for having the nerve to suggest his dismissal was unfair and that things were going in the right direction. It's not even deluded, it's an outright lie and it's an insult to each and every one of us, especially the majority who were fair and measured in any criticism of his tenure.

Stuff his 100 caps, I have nothing but antipathy for him.

Wrong again, looks like he will asst to Gary Mac at Leeds. Wonders never cease. I hope it works out for him, he deserves it after all the cr*p he has had to put up with recently.

Can't believe that appointment at Leeds, played with McAllister at Liverpool and for him at Coventry but it's still crazy to me, can see it ending in tears....

Staunton set for Leeds Assistant Manager Role.

I think most people here would hope that he can get the experience he needs to make his managerial career a success.

    Good luck Stan.

Whats all this about an interview on the telly?

Was it Brian Kerr-esque with Stan wallowing in self pity?
I think I should the parachute, because I'm great.

In fact, I think I should get both parachutes, in case one doesn't work.

It was worse than self pity, it was just outright deluded and at times outright lies.

“I lost my job for losing one game in twelve”

“Things were getting better towards the end”

“I had injured players ringing me asking to be in squads so I must have been doing something right”

“Hopefully the new guy can finish off what I started”.

does he really? everything that went wrong for Ireland was self-inflicted. Added to that his complete and utter ability to admit any mistakes in hindsight means that I have absolutely no pity for the man whatsoever...

Strange appointment by Leeds imho but maybe Stan has finally found his level (again!)

    He actually said that?

I wouldn't deny it. I was more reffering to Ridsdale, O'leary, now Staunton
