Paul Lennon - The Star
"The international future of Stephen Ireland remains in doubt after confirmation that he will NOT figure in next months friendly with Brazil.
Caretaker boss Don Givens this evening names his squad with the 5 time world cup winners at Croke Park. While Damien Duff makes a welcome return to the panel after 11 months, there is no place for the Man City star.
RIFT
Givens - who will be asked to take charge of the side for the game if no permanent boss is appointed by then - believes the 21 year old has not made any effort to end his rift with the FAI over the infamous 'Grannygate' affair last September.
"There has not been enough shown from that side" said Givens in relation to Ireland, who opted out of previous matches last October for "personal reasons".
While Givens' stance is understandable, there is now a real risk that Stephen may opt to remain outside the senior fold for a more lengthy period..."
Edit - Title should, of course, read "Givens' Brazil squad" and not quad , although piling Don Givens and 22 players onto a Bright yellow quad would be extremely amusing in a "Banana Splits" kind of way. Especially if you were to imagine them driving past Stephen Ireland, pointing and laughing at him.

On the way into the stadium, an elderly San Marino Steward waved us in and said "Tonight, may the best team win"
And they nearly did.
I can't believe the new manager won't be selecting (or almost certainly be in control of) the side. This friendly is now nothing more than a money making farce. Some players will get more time to get accustomed to international football, but what good is it if the new manager doesn't feel they're worthy of a place in the team. It now looks like the new manager will have just two games to prepare the side for the qualifiers FFS.
This is getting really frustrating. Givens and the jobs he is given to me exemplifies what is wrong with the FAI. He has done nothing with our under 21s and is then asked to pick a new manager and also manage our team in (at least ) three games. When will the FAI just bloody sign a manager.
