Irish U-21's get well deserved draw against Germans
Filed at: Monday , June 02 2003 18:15PM
Republic Under-21 captain Liam Miller was the local hero as he gave his side a deserved friendly draw against their German counterparts with an 85th-minute Equaliser in his hometown of Cork this afternoon.
The Irish had been trailing since the 33rd minute when Aston Villa's Thomas Hitzlsperger had given the visitors the lead with Germany's second goal in three minutes to wipe out the 20th-minute opener from another hometown boy, John O'Flynn. And it was O'Flynn who was the provider five minutes from time, teeing up Celtic midfielder Miller to slot home from close range.
Both sides were using this game as preparation for UEFA Championship qualifiers later this week, the Irish at home to Albania in Longford on Friday and the Germans going to Kilmarnock to meet Scotland on the same night. It was Don Givens' boys in green who started brightest, with Nottingham Forest midfielder Andy Reid hitting the back of the net after just six minutes after latching onto Miller's chip over the top of the defence only to be ruled offside.
The Irish compensated 14 minutes later when O'Flynn took his chance, running onto a Sean Thornton's through-ball and rounding goalkeeper Tom Franke to lot Home for a well-taken goal in front of his hometown fans. Germany did not take long to get back into the game, however, and not only equalised but went ahead with two well-struck goals in three minutes around the half-hour mark.
The leveller came from prolific Mainz striker Benjamin Auer, who scored his 10th goal in 13 starts for Uli Stielike's side by firing home on the half hour. Then Hitzlsperger sent his country into the lead three minutes later with a stinging shot from inside the area and into the top corner which the diving Graham Stack could not reach wide to his right.
The Germans played out the rest of the half and 25 minutes of the second period without being put under undue pressure. And they very nearly grabbed a conclusive third goal with 20 minutes to go when substitute Thorsten Burkhardt forced a save from Stack and Stephen Capper was forced to clear Christian Tiffert's follow-up off the line. But the home side kept pressing for the equaliser they deserved and when O'Flynn found space on the right inside the area, he held the ball up perfectly before sliding it across for Miller to hit home.

I heard on RedFM they were told by Don Givens that Flynny will be starting against Albania...
Yeah I heard that too.Originally posted by Neil

It would be far more surprising if he wasn't starting though after his great performance today.
Hopefully he'll do well again, that games on in Longford, isnt it?
Champions!
well done john o'flynn keep up the good work
yeah its on in Flancare was gonna be on sky but i think rte have the rights now so its not because there a crowd of pr**ks. they dont give a crap about any soccer apart from Celtic because semingly their 'IRISH' and the senior team.
It was great to see two Cork guys scoring today.
JO'F was outstanding today playing against a monster of a center half. I cringed every time he was challenged from behind - if he doesn't have whip lash tomorrow then I don't know what.
Hopefully he makes it through the next couple of games healthy as I think he's got his confidence back ( he really has to after today's performance ).
No defence in the LoI should cause him to loose any sleep from now on.
Saw George tucking into chips and a can @ half time - so much for the regulated diet - that $hit would kill a horse.
He's going to be some loss on Friday.
Irish by birth,
Cork by the grace of God.
Flynnie only proved today what we all know. He is a class act. I mean if you had to pick between him and Graham Barrett on todays showing who would you pick ? In fact if the ball had been played through to Johnno more especially late in the game he could have bagged another few. He will definetly start on Friday night. Pity he'll be missing for Pats game but I suppose thats the price of success.
The big question is how much longer we can keep him at the cross?

Well, as long as he's happy in Cork you shouldn't lose him to another irish club. If he goes abroad sure you'd have to let him...just hope that the club manage to get some readies for him!
No idea that game was on today...would have been there in a flash. Was sitting in me bedroom reading a feckin book around the corner on Frankfield Terrace![]()
Not surprised that people didn't know the game was on.
There was no advertising for the game at all.
I only made it coz a buddy told me it was on.
Plus, Aertel were advertising a 3pm kick off, even though the match didn't start til 3.30.
The FAI could have got a much bigger crowd if they just put a little effort in.
That aside, JOF played well and didn't lok at all out of place against a very skillful German team. It was great ot see him score. Just hope we can hang on to him.
Seriously, I didn't realise that deal meant Sky couldn't show the U21 games. I thought it was great having them on live tv, shame that RTE have to spoil everything.Originally posted by drummer boy

Champions!
i'm not sure that u21 games are covered by the updated bill the government launched, if it is then it's a shame, because RTE have no more interest showing u21 games than they did showing the LOI.
Sky still have exclusive rights to the U-21 games and friendlies. It's only the games covered by the legislation (qualifying games) that RTE have got.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.
Thats not good.If the game is on Sky then a load of English managers will see Flynny in action.Fcuk it anyway...........![]()
It's all just a bunch of Tree-Hugging hippy crap.
Checked out the 6 one news on RTE1 on monday. They just about mentioned the final score, but nothing on scorers or even show the goals themselves. Clear to see how much RTE care about irish football again.
the result and scorers made the sky sports news bulletin that i get on a US station. no pictures though.
Does anyone know if Flynnie played for the U21's against the full team yesterday. Would have been great experience if he did. Flynnie skinning John O Shea is a sight I would pay to see. Who got the U21's goal?
