Thats my point - if they do progress and there is every possibilty they will with the backers they have - then GUFC will be in trouble financially - simple as that. Look at the bigger picture, 5-10 yearsdown the road, whatever but it can happen.

how?.... put simply it was GALWAY rovers and they were representing galway city and county...salthill and mervue are representing tiny areas, there not going to draw support frm all areas of galway

The only way another club could threaten United position would be :

A. To change their name to Galway City, Galway FC etc

and

B. And acquire the support of someone who is prepared to put a seven figure
sum annually into the project

Now you may proclaim to know all there is to know about GUFC but you cannot predict the future - accept it!.

Mervue and Salthill could no more put Galway out of business in the next ten years than Cobh or UCD could put Cork/Bohs/Rovers/etc out of business.

Just an idea on this one. I can not see either of these sides threatening Utd's Eircom League future, but it will mean that we can better judge local players who are competing regularly against Eircom league standard opposition and therefore we won't have to take chances on players who star at Junior level (Vinny Faherty) but then struggle when they make the step up.

the biggest threat to GUFC will be GUFC themselves. Over the years it has been dogged by very well meaning but weak committees. Now we are blessed with professional staff and a clear thinking board. Now their is clear competition for the footie market of galway so now is the time for every Utd supporter to pull together and sell season tickets as if your life depended on it. I know I know im coming round to the idea that maybe this will keep Utd on their toes and it gives a failsafe for the fai that they will have some club in Galway to take up the challenge if Utd get into finance difficulties down the road. A dependance on giving 50 grand a year to use terryland and 40 grand a year to use drum for training needs to be made redundant and a plan to go it alone over the next ten years needs to be put in place with a stadium and facilities belonging to Utd . Thats a challenge maybe all Utd fans need now
