Fabio Capello looks set for England

According to Guardian Unlimited, he's gonna get the job this morning.

    Well done the English FA.

McClaren was sacked more recently than Staunton, yet they have managed to discuss the issue with various people and hire one of the best managers in the world.

I'm sure that money had a lot to do with it, and there is no way the FAI can compete, but that's how it should be done, not pi$$ing around for a few months just choosing the people to recommend a manager to the FAI.

Well done to the FA. Capello is a manager I rate very highly and his kind of strict line will be a shock to a lot of the English prima donnas and I expect he won't take any crap from the media either.

So they appoint a bloke who can't speak English, and who puts the word bor into boring, on the field. He makes Eriksson's tactics seem revolutionary.

Yes, I can see the English press/public taking kindly to him.

Most of the players can barely speak English so it won't be that much of a problem.

I read in the paper today that Capello conducted the interview in fluent English. Maybe all he said was "four million pounds please"!

Had to laugh at the outright racism, displayed by the PL's finest, when interviewed about it. "I want an Englishman to do it". None of them volunteered to put themselves forward for the job of course.

The reason no Englishman will do it, is because of the press attention that goes with it. Already Capello's home has been marked. He may also drop Beckham again, which will go down on Fleet St, like a lead balloon.

    Welcome to "Turnip town", Capello.

when he gets sacked in 3 years time they'll be able to appoint Shearer/Adams/Fat Sam/Southgate to get that English bulldog spirit into em...... Cappelo has a brilliant CV but so did Sven.

They will. England always f-up somewhere along the line.

Their media won't be taken by the cautious approach favoured by him, and Sven before him, nor the changes he will make. Instead of getting the best man for the job, they won't rest until that man is English. And even then, they won't rest. I don't see Capello having much time for the likes of Defoe, Bent, and Crouch. I don't see him having much time for the marketing machine on the wing either. This will be seen as treason, and one bad result = the door, to their press.

Cappello obviously has an excellent CV but Sven's record as a manager was impressive as well. I don't think it matters who they get in, this current crop of English players seem to implode as soon as the going gets tough. Long may it continue.

I wouldnt say it was racism wanting a countryman to manage your national team , In an ideal world thats what we would alll want for our country but doesnt always work out that way.

£6m gross by the looks of it, 5 year contract to boot. A worringly good choice by the FA. Does that mean we can get Lippi now?

It does seem on the face of it a good choice and possibly England have cracked it but we still have hope because

    1. He will get the backs of the press up as he will have no time for them
    2. He is Italien and not English
    3. The premiership clubs are pretty powerfull and dont give a fig about the English national side
    4. Dont know if the Italien/spanish press delved into his private life but you can be sure the english press will

Capello's titles have been won with huge resources and at top clubs. Even at Real he was shaky and disliked, winning the league on the last day when Barcelona had thrown the league away in the previous week. And he only did it by bringing back cojones dorados and then dropping him.

He's working with mediocre players that are getting more mediocre by the day, and he won't be able to buy (or get someone else to) his way out of trouble. Plus a press corps that hate foreigners. And he'll p*ss them off dropping Beckham and bring him back when it begins to go Pete Tong. I think he'll struggle but he should qualify as first for South Africa, although I'd have preffered someone useless like McLaren. Nice job to ease your way into retirement.
