Bobby Robson to stay on as International Football Consultant

"Assistant Kevin MacDonald and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly have also been axed but Sir Bobby Robson will stay on as International Football Consultant."

How will this affect the search for a new manager?

"The Board will select people, with considerable football experience in the professional game, to appoint the new manager".

I'm sure an International Football Consultant has to be involved here otherwise what are we paying him for. But this is the FAI we are talking about ....

well .. it rules out the Bora guy who is 63 or something ..

Can you imagine two pensioners managing Ireland? Gift Grub would have a field day with the "odd couple" or "grumpy old men"

This suggests that outside help will be used to select the new boss:

An FAI statement released earlier in the morning read: "The FAI board will now seek to appoint an outside adviser from within the football industry to assist them in the recruitment of a successor.

"The board will select people with considerable football experience in the professional game to appoint the new manager."

Under-21 boss Don Givens will manage the Ireland team in their final Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales next month, while Delaney confirmed

there should be news on the appointment of the FAI's advisers in the next seven to 10 days.

"The board are meeting in a week or a week and a half's time to look at individual names in terms of appointing a couple of advisers to make the next appointment," he said.
"You need dictatorships and poverty to produce great footballers."

Sure Delaney was on Newstalk saying he'd be having no involvement in the process - he's effectively washing his hands of the new appointment before it's even been made. Now that's what I call leadership, John Delaney style

Worst possible scenario........we hammer Wales 4-0 and Givens is given the job immediately on a 5 year deal with Pat Devlin as his assistant.

You couldn't rule it out, it's the FAI afterall.

Yes. Unfortunately for the FAI they forgot in their misspelt press release what Robson's title suggests he is paid for. Or do they know what they are paying Robson for? Or was this a hurried press release with a lot of waffle to end the matter regarding Stan. A lot of questions left unanswered - but what do you expect from the FAI?

Actually, I think it's bordering on disgraceful that Robson is being kept on but it all comes back to the FAI's incompetence.

€250k per annum I believe but he's been off sick through most of it. Considering they were originally paired as a double act, should Bobby not go himself and stop taking money for nothing?

well would you want him near the decision making? Just read the David Kelly piece in the indo this morning .. if you can get past the "he's a decent man to have a pint with and good fun to boot" malarkey .. he makes the point that

"It's a difficult leap for someone of Delaney's substantial ego to countenance but being brave enough to make such a gamble could preserve the well-being of Irish football and, perhaps more pointedly, his job."

So its probably more a move to save his neck ..

The FAI absolutely fears the press. Yesterday's farce highlighted this again. You have to ask yourself why? Is there something else they're trying to cover up? Time for a tribunal methinks

He won't be there after the Wales game. It's only until the end of the campaign! Makes no difference does it.

Jeez, there's no pleasing some people.

He gets castigated for getting involved in the first place, he gets castigated for making a wrong call, now he gets castigated for staying out of the process the next time round and leaving it to more experienced football people.

I don't want him near any decision making! If he's not capable he should also be sacked by mutual consent.

He wasn't castigated for getting involved, he got castigated for the decisions he made. Not having the CEO involved in such an important decision is ridiculous.

John Delaney wants to make decisions but doesn't want to take responsibility for them. Only in the FAI ...

Exactly, his contract expires after this campaign, no point in sacking him now. I'd say he'll be involved with Givens for that game and then sail off to the sunset.
