FAI and Sky change rights deal

The recent legislation put in place by the Irish Government which will allow all major Irish sporting events to be shown by the National broadcaster has forced BSKYB to change its deal with the FAI.

A Eur7.5m agreement was reached between the Irish football governing body and the British satellite broadcaster last summer for the rights to show all Ireland’s home games.

The Government were set for a lengthy court case after the new law disrupted Sky’s deal, while RTE had also initiated legal proceedings to ensure that they would have the right to show Ireland’s Euro 2004 games against Georgia and Albania in June.

But after negotiations with the governing body of Irish football, the British-based broadcaster now have non-exclusive rights to the matches, which shall be shown on Sky One.

RTE will now seek a High court injunction directing the FAI to hand over the rights to screen Ireland’s crunch Euro 2004 qualification double-header next month.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

The FAI should do a deal with TV3, and just fook RTE out of it... Can't stand their whinging after their derisory offer, and then the pathetic way the Government gave into them afterwards...
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.

Agree with you all the way.

If RTE cared about irish football they wouldn't be dragging the FAI to court!

Should be interesting to see what a "fair figure" becomes since RTE gave the IRFU 3m for a similar deal...

    NO NO NO to TV3!!!
Lads, I'm grateful for them for eircom league weekly, but lets be honest, their coverage is absolute sh*te.
Whether its the CL, internationals or the eL, the standard is abysmal.
The studio presenter and panel is embarrassing at times, (Pakie Bonner ????) the production values are below zero and the whole thing feels like Chorus on a bad day.

RTE have f*cked up badly, but at least we will get a much better presentation of the games now, and, given that they got a bit of a kick up the hole, RTE might be a bit more co-operative with the FAI in the future.
Now if only we could get them to properly cover the el, and the eL to co-operate with them........
