That penalty in the 1988 cup final has to be the softest I've ever seen. I bet a few Derry fans are still bitter about that. Mental.
Apologies if this has already been posted, haven't seen a thread for classic/archive League of Ireland footage:

Tallaght Stadium Regular
Jeez there was some crowds at those games in the 70's and 80's.
My favourite clip here
The size of the support and the sheer volume from the crowd would have been special to be part of.
Holy christ what a penalty decision lol.
Roddy Collins, the biggest <insert as appropiate> in Irish Football.
They weren't there, but got them here:

A couple of good goals ... and beards.
lol, worst penalty decision ever in that Dundalk/Derry game.
Life without Rovers, it makes no sense...it's a heartache...nothing but a fools game. S.R.F.C.
Not really to be honest. The crowds at the Cup Finals in the 70's and 80's were no bigger than they have been for the last couple of cup finals. The 74 Harps final had a crowd of 14,000 - less than last year's final in atrocious weather in December.
The 1988 final between Derry and Dundalk had over 21,000 at it - the biggest cup final crowd in 16 years. Cork v Drogheda in 2005 had over 25,000.
Re the 1988 Final, it was a genuinely a blessing in-disguise that City didn't score, as not a word of a lie - we would have had the Irish version of Hillsborough. They had segregation for the final, and whilst there were Dundalk fans sitting down on their terracing in places - yes, genuinely - the crowd in the City half of the ground was absolutely jam-packed. Luckily I was at the top of the terracing on the side opposite the stand (whatever it's called), as it was physically impossible for people to move to get to the topilet, so blokes just p!ssed where they stood and it flowed down the terracing...
Just twelve months later, we were much happier:

Sligo Rovers 2 - 7 Derry City from the end of the 1987/88 season.
Johnny Speak needed to score 3 goals to overtake Paul McGee as the League's leading goalscorer - he ended up scoring six!
This was our last game prior to our FAI Cup final vs Dundalk - as seen above.

Preview of a Derry City vs Dundalk game from 1989/90 season - includes goals from previous games that season and interviews with Jim McLaughlin and Turlough O'Connor.
This one isn't on YouTube, as its too big - a 25 min documentary on Derry City originally shown on Channel 4.
The coverage all relates to the climax of the 1988/89 season - including the 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers which won us the league that year
