Staunton served us well and was one of my favourite players growing up, but we need a real manager with experience, not another hometown favourite. If you're going to give the job to Staunton you might as well give it to Roy Keane.
I met a friend of mine the other night who has been playing eircom league football for the last three years..have not seen the guy in a bit and he told me that he has been told by a couple of different people in the game that Staunton could be our next manager..
I personally want Martin O Neill or George Burley...i have a hunch we are going to get George Graham though..

Fair point. At this point, though, I'd prefer to get someone who would put the fear of God into the players, someone who would really inspire them. It seems that Kerr didn't do this - the jersey wasn't enough for the players. I'd take Steve Staunton, definitely.Originally Posted by vega007

Stan was great at motivating the team not to lose. But I would like to see Irish managers take over at club level before taking the Ireland job. We dont need another Kerr without experience of the media.
He's currently player-coach at Walsall. I think it's his first coaching job (don't think he was a coach at Coventry?)Originally Posted by ranting rover
Stan would have to prove himself at club level first. Certainly has potential.
Worries me though that some managers that have proved themselves to be failures at club level are in the running though.
MoN is the obvious choice if he'll take it and would certainly ge tthe best out of the squad. George Burley would be a very good alternative. George Graham is probably too long out of the game but was a proven success although we'd be awful to watch.
Staunton hasn't proved himself as a manager (yet) so can't see him getting the job. And R. Keane would be ahead of him if he also wanted the job. MON has always been very careful with his managerial choices so it could be some time before we find out whether he is going to take the job.
God, i hate the guy... Staunton manager = my worst nightmare
why the hatred towards stan? obviously the guy cant string 2 words together but one of our good guys surely. cant see him being a manager anywhere thoughOriginally Posted by The Legend

I think its highly unlikely that Stan will be given the job. We need a manager with experience to help bring through the younger players as we need to fill some gaps in the current squad. Stan has little to no coaching experience and we really need a proven manager to take over. Maybe he could be a candidate in years to come but its far too early for him to take the job now
It's looking more and more like Aldridge
Seems more than ludicrous to sack Kerr & bring in the likes of Aldridge or Staunton who have either zero expereince or no management pedigree.

I know it isnt anything to go by but I just have a hunch that Stan would be the right man for the job, said it since the day Kerr was sacked as my post history will prove!! In as close to 10/1 now on PP aswell, which must show people are putting a few bob on him, think he was around 40/1 initially.
one shot... Bang Bang!!!
BBC Gossip
according to the beeb, who are sourcing the Mirror .. this sentence is getting less and less plausibe by the word .. Staunton will be appointed manager next week.
If Stan gets the job the FAI will be a laughing stock, after saying that theywanted a man with experience who can motivate players, and the ability to change formatiosn/tactics.. Stan has 0/3...
If Stan gets the job it'll turn the whole thing into a farce!
I've nothing against him but surely you can't throw someone with his lack of proven ability as a manager into the Intl side...maybe someday he will be right for the job but at this stage, it would be a joke!
Bring back BK!

EXCLUSIVE: STAUNTON THE BOSS FOR IRISH
By Darren Lewis
STEVE STAUNTON is set to replace Brian Kerr as Republic of Ireland boss next week.
The former Ireland, Aston Villa and Liverpool defender is a virtual novice to management and is currently the player-coach at Walsall. But he is known to have a legion of admirers within the Irish FA, who have invited him for an interview this week.
A succession of managers have been linked with the vacant post and Staunton was initially thought to have no chance behind the likes of ex-Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, Villa chief David O'Leary and former Hearts manager George Burley.
But O'Neill and O'Leary have both ruled themselves out of the running and, although Burley remains the favourite, he does not have the unanimous backing of the FAI board. Philippe Troussier, another who was said to be among the front-runners, took charge of Morocco last week.
Staunton played his last match for Ireland in the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea and has recently been backed by shrewd punters from 33-1 to 10-1 to grab the £300,000-a-year post.
Should he agree to take over, he is likely to face a baptism of fire with a host of experienced names stepping aside.
Roy Keane, Kenny Cunningham, the captain, and Stephen Carr have hung up their international boots since the Irish lost out on a World Cup spot.
Holy god. So Staunton is the result of the FAI headhunt ??? We'll be a laughing stock. And that bloody accent he has.......oh god.
Only Ian Haaarte and Nicky Colgan will be able to understand him, so expect them to get a run out every game...Originally Posted by BobbySands
