9 League titles, Everton are a big club. They've also spent longer in the top flight than any other team in England I think (though Arsenal have the longest unbroken run).

Chelsea (dislikable or not) are now one of the biggest clubs in the world and even taking their paltry history into account they belong in the same category as Arsenal, Man Ure and Liverpool. The history argument here is an interesting one but if anybody thinks that Burnley or Huddersfield (for example)are bigger clubs than Chelsea they're just plain foolish.

Spurs and Man City have 4 league titles between them. They are spoofers of the highest order and don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Everton or Villa (who at least won the league and European cup in the last 30 years).

Leeds are a big side for sure but their current plight has to be taken into account to say nothing of their incredible all time haul of 3 league titles (I think) and 1 FA Cup compared to Everton's 9 and 5 or Villa's 7 and 7 (no matter how dusty most of them are). Given that Villa and Man City have both experienced third tier football in the not too distant past Leeds fans shouldn't fear they too much. They can aspire to the heady heights of the upper mid table at best someday too.

Newcastle are over reliant on their gates too when they bang out about aspirations to join the big time. They've developed quite the losing mentality over the years.

Sunderland, btw, have no business on this list for the reasons outlined by LTID below. They have no meaningful history, have never even really established themselves as a premiership club (a few years decent showings under Peter Reid the closest they've come) and in effect are just a third rate Newcastle. List should look as follows:

    Chelsea
    .
    .
    .
    .
    big gap
    .
    .
    .
    .
    Everton
    Aston Villa
    Newcastle United
    Leeds United
    Tottenham Hotspur
    Manchester City
    .
    .
    .
    .
another gap probably filled by a half dozen or so clubs...
    .
    .
    .
    .
    Sunderland.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Wouldn't it be sensible to agree on the criteria first, before trying to list the clubs in order?

However, it would be open to people bending/inventing criteria to allow their club further up the ladder.

    Some criteria have been:

    Trophies
    Attendance

    Any more?

This idea some of you have of Leeds and City being bigger clubs than Everton is frankly laughable !!!
Maybe says more about your age than your knowledge boys!!
After Lpool Man U and Arsenal its a toss of a coin between Everton and Villa and at a push maybe Spurs. Leeds and city are relatively big, but, show me your medals......!!!
Chelski, well right now yes, but over all....debatable.

At a guess I'd say he's talking about the Dixie Dean days but in that case we'll have to factor in Preston North End, Blackpool, Stoke City and a couple of other teams stocked with players called Wilf, Albert, Alf, Wilbert etc...and who fielded goalkeepers who smoked pipes during play.

    Jolly Good Show

No prima-donnas in those days I tell you. Why Wilfred "Gentleman" Jenkins used to work down a mine, play left half and sweep the terraces for 6p a week.

Crippling injuries and serf-like relationships with the club owners, those were the days.

I would suggest that the 3 year old data is now invalid with regard to Chelsea,
    given how success attracts "support"

Chelsea themselves openly acknowledge the limited size of their overseas fan-base at the current time. They've highlighted it as a key growth area in their 5 year plan.

I have no doubt that Everton picked-up more fans in China in the last 3 years by having Li Tie in their team and a major Chinese sponsor, than Chelsea did in all of Asia combined by winning the league in 2005/6. Chelsea are just not that popular over there.

Interestingly, the premiership game to have received the highest ever viewership in China was not one involving Arsenal, Man U or Chelsea - but Everton v Man City a few seasons back, when both teams had major Chinese players involved at the time (Li Tie and Sun Jihai).

So it seems the Sunderland phenomenon is not just an Irish thing

    deal in fact, eh lads?

    http://nufc.com/html/attendance-all-time.html

Load of clap trap about Chelsea's lack of history or support....despite a lack of relative sucess when compared to United or Liverpool, Chelsea are a big club. Fifth on the all time attendance list despite never winning f*** all.....

Asian/Oriental fans are the most fickle in the world.

They will have numerous allegiances at the same time - some conflicting - and literally change them over-night.....!
