My problem would be if the Jewish guy laughed his arse off at the joke's about the black, Muslim, Iirsh , Amercian Guys but then gets offended when its his turn.

For example the girl that just rang joe duffy laughed at all the rest of the show slagging priests prob slagging African’s as he can do that accent but got offended at the down syndrome jokes then people rang up because the poor little “down syndromes” as they where refered to cant speak up for them selves. I find that idea that they cant speak up for themselves way more offensive than any joke. Any of the handicapped people I know are more than well able to speak up for themselves and hate the idea that people treat them like morons .
My point, which you've missed, is that some people will be offended by things others will not. Just because you are not offended by some of Tiernan's material doesn't mean others won't be.

Back to my original question - does a Holocaust survivor have any reason to be insulted by jokes about the Holocaust?

My point is that your statement of -
What kind of idiots go to see a comedian and get offended by a joke?
is all-inclusive, when it shouldn't be. It suggests that anybody who is insulted by any joke is an idiot, whereas I think my example shows that is not the case.

1)I dont think a jewish person that gets easily offended at anti jew jokes should go see a comedian that tells haulacaust jokes and get offended by the jokes

    2) Its just a joke

And also just because he is offended by it does that mean its ok for him to get up and ruin the show for everyone else ?

I have to admit I've only seen him live once and seen his dvd and I think he's quite funny but nowhere near the standard of Dylan Moran, Dara O'Brian or even David O'Doherty.

My mother was complaining about him but as I explained to her The thing about TT is he says at the begining of the show "This is not the real world, we're hear for a bit of craic and a laugh" if you don't accept that then it's not for you, go watch someone more pc.

On a slightly related topic, Ed Byrne used to be very funny but he's been on a serious slide in the last couple of years, I have a vision of Tiernan going the same way, his material just isn't original enough.

Comic refuses to drop Down Syndrome jokes
    Tuesday November 27 2007

COMEDIAN Tommy Tiernan has refused to drop a routine from his sell-out
Dublin show that the families of people with Down Syndrome do not find funny.

The sharp-tongued comic is under fire for making comments during his run at
Vicar St about the benefits of getting people with the condition to courier drugs.

Half a dozen families have contacted Down Syndrome Ireland to complain that his
jokes are highly offensive to their relatives.

Not a big fan of Russell Brand but I have to admit he was funny on the Late Late. Not as funny however as the people who send in those ridiculous text messages that appear on the bottom of the screen.During Jordans illuminating
interview messages appeared declaring the wan with the huge inflatable funbags to be "a great role model for young women"(I kid you not) and an "inspiration" to us all.I can only guess that some of the late late audience
have been necking Es.Also anyone else notice how talk shows are now more or less advertising vechicles for comedians and everybody else to flog their DVDs and Books.

I'm not sure if this is offensive because it's usually difficult to tell. As they said on the show, I defy anyone to be able to identify one of them from behind

Streets ahead of any Irish comic atm, imo. The only downside, is too much of his act is spent on religion. It's hilarious, but I would like him to vary his act more. Still, he's well ahead of drab O'Doherty, Moran, and both Byrnes.

Look lads, if you get offended by a comic, the only advice I can give is go to Brendan Grace's funny but PC gigs.

Yeah you're damn right, he has a Perrier Award, an appearance on the Letterman Show and numerous appearances at the Just For Laughs Festival to prove your point too.

When TT started off he was hilarious but I think he has steadily gone downhill since then. He seems to to be relying too much on shock tactics and rehashing old ideas. I think he just needs to take a break from touring for a few years and live a little and come up with a few more fresh ideas.

On the topic of Tiernan as a comedian, I do think he's lost it to a point, as he relies on his energy to draw the crowd in rather than his stories these days. That said he is still streets ahead of any Irish comedian bar Dylan Moran, who is the second best comedian in the world at the moment, only behind Jerry Seinfeld, for my money.

Russell Brand's live show is actually funny, as you can see that the man is actually naturally witty and can interact with the crowd as well as the best of them. The girls having orgasms everytime he talks on the other hand.....

As for getting offended at the Holocaust, Down Syndrome etc., basically if you don't like it don't go to these shows. Scout ahead, find out what the comedian is like (Seinfeld and Peter Kay for example don't offend people with disabilities, go to him) and base it on that. Everyone in this country knows what Tiernan is about, so shouldn't go if they don't like sections of society being insulted. Personally I don't think there are any taboo subjects, so long as the comedian doesn't single out one audience member, drag them up on stage and proceed to embarass them for cheap laughs

But as in my earlier post he did do this, to a girl in a wheel chair.

Well that is going on what your mate told you and then you told us so i cant have any opinion on that. could your mate have taken it up wrong ?

Maybe she said something when he was slagging off people in wheelchairs and then he had a go back.

    :
The point of that segment is not to poke fun at the disabled. it's Ricky Gervais charcter who is the butt of the joke. It's the old "comedy of embarrassment" rountine. Just like the Germans episode of Fawlty Towers is having a go at Basils attitude, not at the Germans.

As for the general point. I do think it's possible for a comic to go too far. For example, I haven't had the same respect for Billy Connolly since the Ken Bigley remarks incident. (Mind you, that's taking the reports of what he said as being accurate, so I am open to correction there) Not to say that anything is off limits, it all depends on how the topic is treated. If Tommy Tiernan did make fun of a disabled girl in the audience then that was wrong, and I wouldn't defend it. However I've never seen any material he's done that I thought was offensive. And I still think he's one of the top 3 Irish stand ups.
