No, his record in recent years is awful. His last 6 jobs in football have been failures, As manager with Australia, Cyrstal Palace and Leeds, on the board at Pompey, coached Boro to 7 wins from 25 games and as assistant manager with England.
He's obviously a chancer but his mangerial record is actually average and has been talked up by his drinking buddies in the media (he owned the club, 'Scribes', that they all drank in back in the day). Plus his best days are long behind him.
He took a team that O'Leary, for all his faults, had in the top 5 to relegation trouble, that should tell you all you need to know.
I'd have 'No, he's a crap manager' as the choice in the poll rather then it be the fact he's a chancer!
Venables glory days were 25 years ago with Palace and QPR. Having mates in the media to keep your profile high is just not enough for me. Spurs, failure, leeds failure, boro failure, australia failure, No thanks El Tel![]()
Is the FAI even aware of the opposition to Venables as manager? If their only contact with the fanbase is through the media (and sometimes it seems that it is) then they'll only be aware of the support Venables has from people like Dion Fanning.
I'd feel slightly (only slightly mind you) better if there was some acknowledgment of this from the FAI.
40 - 0 against venables at this stage, are we actually a good cross section of Irish fans from which to take a reading. Is their something about the particular demographic on this site that causes us to dislike venables (bar the fact that he is ****e). I know that the numbers should change somewhat but I am even surprised at 40 - 0 at this early stage.
This is not the best signature in the world, this is just a tribute
In response to Schlooooomp.
No, I'd talk to plenty of Ireland fans who don't post here and no one to a man wants him. These are people who I'd have had plenty of differences of opinion with regarding managers, Saipan etc over teh years but to a man they all think it's teh wrong appointment.
Worth e mailing the likes of Daniel McDonnell or Eamon Carr at the indo or any other journalists against the appointment if the poll starts getting decent numbers on it?
Garry Doyle in the Mirror was dead against it last week but seems to think it's going to happen regardless now. Hyland is up on his high horse banging on in the Herald again today.
Anyone hear Gift Grub this morning by the way?
Only Fools and Horses with Tel Boy, Satn as Rodney and Bobby Robson as Grandad??
Quality! At least Mario Rosenstock won't be stuck for raw material....
the only way i can see vanebales working is this:
a small basic salary
a bonus per every 5 ranking places we rise
a huge bonus for qualifiying
a even bigger bonus for making the quarter finals
even bigger one for winnering the thing
he's obsessed with money
we'd need to ban from:
publising a book
doing advertising related to being ireland manager
doing a newspaper column
making money from public appearances
Venables saw what chartlon did and sees this job as an earner!
The only thing I can say for Venables is that he must be one charming individual because nobody ever seems to have a bad word to say about him. Players love him, pundits love him, etc.
I'd say he's the type of cockney wideboy who could rob your car and sell it back to you and you'd be grateful for it.
So far 100% is not in favour of him , can all of us be wrong ??? and by the way it's 48 -0 at the moment .
I voted no aswell, but the reason it is a landslide at the moment on this site is probably down to the well thought out reasoning on threads like the Roy Hodgson one. We're all vey informed on here now so know we can do better than Venables. With all the facts presented here I doubt anyone would go for Venebles over someone like Hodgson.
I guess no one will vote yes if he's not their no 1.
Can this link please be sent to John Delaney. Oh and also to Dion Fanning. But i guess we are only irish fans, he would know more than us about venables credentials![]()
Hodgson would be my number one. I would still click yes if the question were about Houllier, Jewell, Jol, hell even Souness. But as you stated we are all football people in here, the most of us have a very gopod football knowledge. We are well informed about Venables past and can make up our own mind. Nobody wants the man
Absolutely 100% NO to Venables!!!!
53-0.............surely someone in the FAI must read this site and see the total opposition towards this appointment that exists.Never before have I seen the posters on this website speaking with such a united voice.
This appointment would be the final nail in the Delaney era coffin!!!!!
Bohs Will Be Back!!!
Hodgson by a mile for me too and yes come to think of it I would probably click yes to Houllier, Jol and other credible candidates too. So you're right there.
Seriously though, what is going to happen if Venables does get the job? Will there be a huge backlash or will we all just get on with it?
I for one would want evidence that they had contacted others and were rejected etc. I simply could not take that he was just offered the job without exhaustive negotiations with other candidates first - that would be the final straw for me.
Will someone ring into Newstalk or text in and point this out. Let them know the Irish fans reaction to having this man as possibly out new manager
Just e mailing the last word.
If you're covering the Ireland manager stroy tonight then this may be of interest.

The link above brings you to a page on Foot.ie, a message board for Irish football fans. The vast majority of posters on it are well informed football fans, a lot of whom follow the team home and away. There's been a lot of debate on the forum regarding the people being mentioned in connection to the Ireland job and indeed there's individual threads for other candidates such as Roy Hodgson, Graeme Souness, even Liam Brady.
A poll was put up on the Venables thread earlier today to guage if anyone wants him to be appointed. So far 56 people have voted with 100% of them totally opposed to the idea. This, on on a forum where differnce of opinion on everthing from previous mangers, players though Sapian are the norm. Yet no one wants this man in charge.
I'd suggest that a lot of posters on the site would have a better knowledge of the game then the various hacks who seem blinkered to the fact that this man has failed in his last 6 jobs in football unless you count 7 or 8 wins in 25 games with Boro a success.
John Delaney will be playing with fire on this appointment, I've never seen such unamimous agreement from a cross section of fans regarding an appointment.
Shame on cavan fan and slow 2 anger![]()
Agree with btid this is the most unanimous voting in terms of football that I've seen on this site.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!
