Nope it was the appointemnet of Stan that was the mistake. Even if they had carried out a national referendum the selection of Stan would have been wrong. On the other hand if Delaney had consulted the tea leaves and decided on Leo Bennhakker it would have been fine. It's another example of the FAI obsession with process and power. No-one in the FAI seems too bothered as to who is appointed just that the junior representative for Monaghan women's football is not being consulted.
Would that be advice like this: from http://www.football365.com/story/0,1...899984,00.html
So he told Rio that he can run with the ball. Genius. The Bloke's A Genius
As reported by The Daily Mail:
'Terry Venables made his way across the training pitch at Carrington, pulled Rio Ferdinand aside and quietly reminded the England defender that he had the ability to carry the ball out from the back.
'Those precious moments, the nugget of information or the tactical insight from an experienced member of the backroom team, can make players feel a million dollars.
'The following evening - August 16, 2006 - Ferdinand did just that during England's 4-0 destruction of Greece in Steve McClaren's first game in charge.
'Venables had won the players over and McClaren was convinced his appointment was the right decision.'
Coaching is just sooooo difficult.
can we have some kind of ANTI TEL pressure group? Every media article I've read seems to think his appointment would go well with the fans???!!! Are they having a laugh. Now I hear that the 3 man panel is Bobby Robson, David Pleat and Howe. WTF is going on?

You'll NEVER beat the Irish.......you'll just draw with us instead!!!
Maybe we should turn this thread into a poll? I don't think there is more than a handful on this thread who are in favour of his appointment.
Plus lets be honest we know certain sections of the media read this forum. A resounding 90 % anti- Venables would do wonders for his Paddy Power odds!
So mods can a poll be set up for a simple "Yes" or "No" asking whether we want Venables or not please?
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

Can we start chain mailing the FAI to ensure they don't go down this route?
I'll be the first to say I voted no. And if he is appointed and does well, I'll be the first to say.......
.... that someone hijacked my account around Mid Nov 2007 and that I'm actually in favour of his appointment!![]()

Lads I voted against Venables but do you think his personality and his dodginess is one of the main reasons so many of us are against him. There is turmoil in my brain over this one at the moment.
In Trap we trust
I wouldn;t say there is a definable reason Neil, I'd more say its a culmination of things.
His dodgy dealings.
His recent associations with mediocrisy.
The hard sell by Fanning and others.
His abiltity to leave a job himself better off than when he started , that is, a pay-off.
It would be nice to appoint a manager for a two and a half year term, said manager finishes his contract, and then we negotiate on another or start again. It can't be that hard can it?

My real worry is I can't see him getting us to the WC. I think he is a reasonable coach. The players like him. I just think he lacks that extra bit of something to get us over the line. The "arfur Daley" stuff means nothing to me. Charlton was a dour ITV pundit before he took over the Ireland job. There is no way the players would have chosen him over Bob Paisley. Yet he had that extra something, football nous or (luck?) to get us to 3 finals.
Honest! I am not a secret Tim nor a closet Sham - I really am a Seagull.
I actually have no problem with his personality, it would be a welcome improvement on Stan. However his dodginess is something that worries me, sure a person needs to be appropriately compensated for the job they do, venables takes this to extremes and bar the England coaching job, his last number of forays into management have been driven for purely financial reasons.
His record is another aspect that I have issue with, it is vastly inflated, Euro 96 bugs me no end. He didn't qualify the team, he didn't win the tournament, he won 2 games out of 5 in 90 mins, England were playing at home (Yuri Geller won the Scotland game for them by moving the ball as Gary Mac was about to strike it for the penalty).
I think there are numerous objective reasons why venables is not the right man for the irish job.
This is not the best signature in the world, this is just a tribute
