Time to take the head out of the sand, this is not idle speculation.
You need to understand from whom and where all this information regarding Venables and Townsend is emanating from.
A selection panel will/can only select and report based on the criteria set before it. See Genesis I, II and III
However, it could be certain people just jumping the gun and putting one and one together to actually get three.

its all coming from with the fai i'm sure, they are aware of delaney's movements etc.
Pro Venables factions thought throwing in the name townsend would turn round some of the anti venables sentiment going around.
Also the anti venables (pro brady??) faction leaked the story in the Irish Daily Star that three of the 10-person Board of Management are strongly opposed to the candidacy of Venables

AFAIU they take the book offline to protect themselves from a surge of bets when the book is not being monitered. My understanding is nothing more than a guess.
Venables has drifted out to 8/11 on Betfair and hey presto 5 seconds later after a page refresh he is at 4/5.
I'm not in favour of Venables getting the job.
However I have read in a number of places that, although Venables did suggest 3-5-2 against Croatia, he wanted Rio Ferdinand to play as the sweeper. He was overruled by McLaren who went 3-5-2 but with John Terry as sweeper!
I've read a number of articles from Rio Ferdinand where he has praised Venables for giving him sound tactical advice and making him a better player.
I am well aware of Venables failings and I would rather see Roy Hodgson get the job. However, my worry about Venables if he was appointed wouldn't be his coaching ability (it's hard to find a top class player who he has worked with who doesn't rate him as a coach).
I think that, in fairness, the England debacle was much more McLaren's fault than Venables. He is a top class coach and, frankly, not suited to being a number 2 (especially to an inferior manager). Towards the end, as I understand it, he was largely "frozen out" by McLaren with little or no input.
I'd be more concerned about his commitment and, if the going gets tough, will he just look for a payoff and go back to his comfortable life as a TV pundit?
The FAI hasn't clearly learned from the mistakes made with Stan. IMO it's wasn't the appointment of Stan that was the critical mistake but the process that lead to his appointment. This process is still in place and it's a process I have little faith or trust in.
Alarm bells are ringing in my head with the continued mention of Terry Venables' name.
Alarm bells are ringing indeed... I just hope that somebody on the FAI Board has the balls to stand up and be counted for today at this "hastily arranged meeting" .. and to be fair, going on the article in the indo this morning, it would seem that some of the board want to interview all the candidates... (so no more of the "I had a lot of paperwork to do EAMON .. he of "I knew Stan was the wrong man from the beginning but I let John get away with that answer") Of all the candidates, Hodgson is the strongest .. he is starting to be mentioned for other jobs now. .. at Inter, Derby County, Australia .. even the England job.
And that's of the candidates that they have only considered .. what about all the names that we were suggesting here a few weeks ago .. the Dutchmen, germans etc?
