having Pleat on board gives me some hope of hodgson.
I dont think pleat would be that much fan of Venables either (and thats because of the tottenham link)

Where does Pleat's name appear? A waffler par excellance so I think he might like Venables
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

And yet, Venables holds the high ground. Consider this: at today's meeting, the names of septuagenarians Bobby Robson and Don Howe, in addition to David Pleat, are set to be submitted as king-makers.
i know Pleat is bluffer but he thinks himself cultured ,european and a student of the game. i can see him liking hodgson somehow

He didn't know who Santini was when Spurs appointed him either. Couldn't believe it.

I've heard Hodgson linked with Derby (with Ince), Inter Milan as Technical Director and Australia. It'd beggar belief if he wasn't approached and interviewed.

Is there anything negative about Hodgson at all? Can't understand how he's not top of the list. One thing that strikes me there is has he ever worked with young players. Jobs at Inter and Blackburn suggest not.

So Jewell has taken the Derby job, and McLeish has taken the Birmingham job. Two jobs that were possibles for Hodgson. Any updates on the Australia job??
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'

Duff played under him at Blackburn I think (it was mentioned above).

My only conern is that our players didn't react well to a "measured" approach. I think they want a table-thumping old school guy because that's about all they know.

Venables wont be getting that one anyway. There was an inquiry after he left that job about the amount of money spent

Hodgson has had no contact with the fai

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ls/7117572.stm

Hodgson, who has also been linked with the vacant Republic of Ireland job, said he had had no contact with the FAI, the English Football Assocation or the Scottish FA
this bit is also an interesting comment on the process

"I don't have an agent or anyone touting my name around England.
"I've been very lucky in my career over the last 32 years in that jobs have found me rather than I have found them and I don't see any reason to change that."

Some record. 4 defeats in 32 qualifying games.
In our last campaign we lost 3 games from 12 matches.

Yes his time at Blackburn was a disaster. He won 22 out of 62 with a good Blackburn side.

In addition he has managed no-one for more than 2 years since the Swiss job (this is being held against Venables).

All of the candidates have their flaws. I honestly believe there is not much to choose between Hodgson, Houllier, Venables (if he is motivated, i.e. performance based pay) and a few others. It depends on the spin you put on it.

    From the same BBC article:

Hodgson's contract with Finland expires at the end of November and the Finns have called a media conference on Friday to clarify the Englishman's future.

"My contract runs out at the end of this month, but I haven't made up mind yet what I'm going to do," said Hodgson, who has been invited to attend a coaching convention next week in Brazil.

"We've been negotiating for a while and they've been attempting to get me to stay. We're still discussing it, but my future is very open and I haven't committed myself to the next two years."

"But I can only echo Sven-Goran Eriksson's sentiments. When people from either top federations or big clubs want to speak to you it's very foolish not to do so.

I'd add that when a respectable candidate is available, it'd be foolish not to approach him and interview him.

But why did Delaney himself ring up Paul Jewell and beg him not to take any other job offers when he couldn't even be bothered to get some ex-player to phone Hodgson to find out if he'd be interested

How so? He rang to find out if the reason was within his or the FAI's control e.g. money. I think that's a good move.
