    Sinead O'Connor

Just listening to her latest there and I have to say that she is the biggest enigma in music today, both personally and professionally. Personally I think a lot of what she does and says is nonsense, the Priest phase, the rasta thing and the Mary Coughlan horror show cast her in a bad light I think (I hear in person she's a really nice woman, well my girlfriend's grandmother, who is friends with her sister says she is anyway), but there is something slightly endearing about her. Maybe its because of her childhood that I don't want criticise her too much, I don't know.

But musically I doubt anyone would argue that she is one of the most talented females, vocally, on the planet. Some of her songs are absolute gold, and she knocks spots off of so called world class singers like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, people who haven't a God's honest clue how to use their voice. A lot of people criticise Sinead for bringing out albums like Throw Down Your Arms and Theology, but honestly I think she should be applauded for at least trying different things. That said I hope she gets over whatever misgivings she seems to have with recording with Groove Armada and gets in the studio with them.

Oh and I'd recommend picking up Theology

Saw her live in NY a few weeks ago. I was there to see Damien Dempsey, who was opening for her. Didn't expect too much from Sinead, but she was really excellent.

Funny that she collabarated with Ian Brown.
Two musical geniuses I love who are unlikely to ever reclaim former glories.
Both sound like they've spent a few too many months wasting away on couches with joints.
See any interview either has done.
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

I think she is amazingly talented and the situation with her and indeed some other talents is more fuel to my theory, which goes like this:- musical ability is doled out as compensation for other inadequacies.......by mother nature/God who or whatever floats your boat.

Look at all the basket cases their have been in music, Phil Spector, Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis, Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Jim Morrison... and that's a random top of the head list. Each of them is talented , their music may not be in some cases my particular taste, but the link between musical talent and mental instability is definitely strong.

On the plus side -unlike too many proficient singers she rarely if ever reduces a song to a vehicle for showing off her talent. I think that's highly commendable. It's not hiding your lantern under a bushel either. I just think she has her priorities straight that way.

On the downside -while perhaps some would hold it up as evidence of her "inate vulnerability" she strikes me as being quite suggestable (as in "easily led") and that makes me suspect a lack of confidence in her own material.

Beyond that I found the whole rasta thing excruciating and thought she deserved a slap for her "well I don't know...I'm just a singer" quip on the Late Late.
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"

Sinead rates Damien's music very highly and provided backing vocals to "Negative Vibes" and "Celtic Tiger" on his "Seize the Day" album.

Her former partner, John Reynolds, produces Damo's albums.

Yeah, theres no middle ground with Damo. You either love him or hate him.

Heading to see Damo at Vicar Street at the end of the month.

Commiserations on Hector turning up. Must have ruined a good night. There's just no getting rid of him. Did you at least get to within punching distance of him?
