Who's this Steven Ireland fella. Must be handy with that number of points. Why don't we call him up?

It's just Fantasy Football, he doesn't really exist, like Superman ( or Stephen's Hair! )

Touché. I'm more surprised that we only have 29 players in the Premiership. Is that really it?

24 Irish players have started a Premiership game this season:
    Goalkeepers:
    Colin Doyle
    Shay Given

    Defenders:
    Stephen Carr
    Stephen Kelly
    Steve Finnan
    Andy O'Brien
    Ian Harte
    Joey O'Brien
    John O'Shea
    Paul McShane
    Richard Dunne

    Midfielders:
    Kevin Kilbane
    Lee Carsley
    Liam Miller
    Stephen Hunt
    Stephen Ireland

    Strikers:
    Robbie Keane
    Roy O'Donovan
    Shane Long
    Anthony Stokes
    Caleb Folan
    Daryl Murphy
    David Connolly
    Kevin Doyle

Folan has moved onto the Championship.
Keith Treacy has been introduced as a substitute in a League Cup game against Portsmouth, and was an unused sub against Liverpool in the Premiership
Graham Kavanagh was on the bench against Man City in the Premiership.
Treacy and Kavanagh are the only players to feature as subs, and not get a minute on the pitch in the Premiership
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

The word "dearth" springs to mind for some reason.

Ooof, dearth placed alongside spring seems weird in an oxymoronic kinda way. But, leaving aside the irony in a nature sense, the season of lambs gambolling, bunnies caught in headlights and buds that burgeon but not flower seems all too appropriate for Irish midfielders.

Anyway, to cast this in a more bright spring morning than autumn twilight shade, two of our best midfielders, Steven Reid and Duffer, have yet to sprout onto the scene this year while two others, McGeady and Reid eile, are in very good form even if not on the hallowed Premiership soil.

Yeah, though we still have Duff and Stephen Reid to come back from injury this season so, at least we have a couple more to come back into the frame.

Which in it's own perverse way may explain why England gained more points in their group than we did
