    Jordan seals victory for Rovers

    Sligo Rovers 3-2 Galway United
John Jordan came off the bench to fire the winning goal as Sligo Rovers came from behind to claim a League Cup victory over Connacht rivals Galway United at the Showgrounds on Wednesday night.

Jordan was introduced by Rovers boss Don O’Riordan 20 minutes from time, and found an 83rd minute winner for the home side.

Galway’s Barry Moran put his side ahead in the 23rd minute only for former Athlone Town striker Stephen Mullen to equalise for Rovers just before the break.

Rovers start striker Paul McTiernan grabbed his fifth goal of the season seven minutes after the break, but when Moran – a former Sligo player – notched his second of the game twelve minutes from the end, it looked as though this derby would end in a share of the spoils.

But then came Jordan’s intervention, getting on the end of a Derek O’Brien free kick to find the visitors’ net to hand the win to Sligo, who fielded a full-strength side on the night.

Sligo Rovers: Kelly, Rossiter, O’Dwyer, Sheridan (Jinks, 60), Gorman (Purcell, 51), Watson, Keane, Cretaro, O’Brien, Mullen (Jordan, 70), McTiernan.

Galway Utd: Burke, Harty, Geraghty, Quirke, Keady, McGuire, Goldbey, Folan, Moran, Walsh, Quinlan (Lee, 67).

    Referee: D. Tomney (Dublin)

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
