Stephen Carr was as good a full back as Steve Finnan, but he never came back the same player after his knee injury. He was asked out of retirement by Steve Staunton
i reckon finnan could on for longer than the 2010 world cup. he isn't particularly pacy so he probably won't miss it (besides his positioning is generally excellent). Only fear is that he may retire from internationals, though he has thus far been quite dedicated to the cause.

Any link for this?
I never bother researching facts for things like this but I would take a stab at - age 29 and Kerr.
I seem to remember thinking - 'thats horrid young to retire from your country - Carr you little let down shyte' and then 'sure the sterility of the Kerr set-up must have been one of the main reasons'.
The dude abides....
Good riddance to him, he was a useless, cowardly p***k anyway
very good player who had bad luck with injuries in his later career
kinf of all went a bit pear shaped after about a year at newcastle
he should have stayed retired.
Lats retired after the last qualifiers, I think.
Played four times since; last time in Denmark.
Shame really cos I thought around 2000 that he would be really deadly for us , never quite worked out since then , injuries ruined him
Mind you, if you were given a second name like this, you may have reason to look grumpy!

He was shocking against Denmark. Our worst player in that game.
The liitle fcuker has endorsed everything I ever said about him.
Although my mate was his coach at Stella Maris and loved him.
