For what it is worth I think Bertie is a lack duck Taoiseach. A bit like US President in last 2 years of 2nd term. Everyone knows he leaving & no credibility or mandate left...

I totally agree. Always thought Alan Dukes had all the qualities of a Taoiseach. He was tall ,wore spectacles and spoke fluent Irish

Scrooge's budget is out next week. Wonder how much belt-tightening will be done, after we were told it would be loosened, this time last year, and 6 months ago??

The indications are there will be a lot of belt-tightening, but this doesn't stop politicians getting significant wage increases, of course.

I would guess will be no change in PAYE tax bands but some indexing f the bands. Since wages increase means more money for the State if all things stay equal.

Waiting with interest to see these "Green" taxes. I don't expect them to introduce the much promised green taxes linked to emissions but just lazy increase on taxes on large engines - i think large is anything over 1.6L here

Bound to be some sort of property tax changes. They could drop stamp duty on new homes but that means less tax & no guarantees of extra houses.

Increases on tax on drink (spun as health tax) & cigarrettes.

Thank you Mr. Cowen for giving us the odd tenner or two extra in the budget. What you failed to mention was that, in the new financial year, bus/train/tram, M50, esb, gas, phone, and a+e charges will rise straight away, and swallow up the increase. Case of giving us a fiver and taking a tenner back, methinks.

Mind you, it's good to know that they've rejected the pay rise.

No, no, that was too good to be true, they've merely deferred taking it for a year, as if it's any more acceptable.

Next, they're out to rob us of our liberty, by signing the EU "Reform" Treaty, along with the other heads of EU States, that the French and Dutch electorate forced them to re-negotiate. For their sins, they won't be given the opportunity to say no on it second time around, so we are the only country to hold a referendum on it, and if it's passed, it could be the last EU one we have. And that's just for starters.

Further evidence that Bertie is lame duck Taoiseach. Says that doing a u-turn on wage increase would not be correct only to change his mind a few weeks later.

Getting difficult to remember all the "loans" he has received at this stage.

No Bertie will step down before the next election, Cowen will assume leadership & claim all the bad things in recent years Berties fault & that he should be elected as reformer.

If you think this years budget was tight then next years will be a lot worse.

Well Cowen does have to finad an extra �8m from somewhere to pass on to the SDCC via the Dept of Sport, so now you at least have the comfort of knowing your money is literally going to a good home
