Venables isnt that loved at Tottenham at all btw, he shafted the club for his own financial gain.

And Howe must hate him (being a gooner and all )
Are you saying that David Pleat was manager in 1984.

He wasnt, Keith Burkinshaw won the Uefa Cup in 84.

Or am I mis-reading your post.

Paul Dempsey on Setanta just said that Andy Townsend is on the selection commitee... Townsend is on their Champions League show tomorrow and he will be grilled about his role.

Sunday Mirror, Nov 10, 2002 by ANDY TOWNSEND

I'VE read in the papers over the past few days that I'm to be involved in the FAI's selection process for a new manager.
I can tell you now that's a load of rubbish. I want nothing to do with the FAI, or its search to find a new Ireland boss.
There's not a cat's chance in hell that I would agree to be on any of their committees. And anyone - and I'm talking about ex-players here - who does agree to help out is setting themselves up for a fall.
You might as well line yourself up against a wall and be executed now. Because one thing's for sure, if the new manager turns out to be poor, who do you think would take the blame?

This consultative committee is just a ruse invented by the FAI big wigs to protect themselves as usual. It's an absurd idea. They should be big enough to make the decision for themselves without dragging ex-players and captains into it.

interesting - so no robson who recommended venables to england in the mid 90s and no pleat who people reckoned would favour Venables because of tottenham links.

I really dont know what to make of Townsend or Givens who knows what either of them will be thinking.
Givens is employed by the FAI and Townsend doesnt think much of them.

Don Howe - assistant to Terry Venables at Euro 96.

Don Givens - Played with Terry Venables for years at QPR.

Andy Townsend - Worked with Terry Venables for years at ITV.

If these really are the 3 men then its a ****ing joke at this stage

Never mind their affiliation with Venables what in the blue hell merits Givens and especially Townsend being on the selection committee!!!

I think I might be thick or something, but why has Andy Townsend resurfaced a all??? Don't get me wrong, he was a fine international for us, but why him? He was three captains ago...Why not somebody like Ken Cunningham, who isn't (yet) as deep into the whole punditry thing.

Only for i heard this on the radio this morning i would have thought this to be a wum.

Venables it is then - ah well can't be any worse than Stan.

I wonder about the FAI sometimes - is there someone from the GAA secretly running the FAI and deliberatly trying to make the organisation look as pathetic as possible?

If they worked with him, then they know whether he's good, bad or indifferent. Just because you worked with someone, doesn't mean you think the world of them as I am sure we all know.

Fairly disparaging article on the whole process from McDonnell this morning: http://www.independent.ie/sport/socc...s-1231940.html

Yes, it's astonishing. Appoint the 3 men most likely to advocate Venables.

Townsend choosing wouldn't surprise me, good servant and all that, but a dependable voice? By god can he run with the hare & hunt with the hound.

"I'll never work for the FAI! I'LL DIE FIRST, I tell you!"
"Andy, would you like some big piles of money to sit on an FAI selection committee?"
"Oooh, yes please. Can I have it in used £50's?"

I cant imagine Don Givens ever being enthusiastic about anyone

"Mr Givens, What do you have to say about the fireman who, despite being temporarily blinded and overcome by smoke, managed to rescue 50 children from that burning orphanage?"
    "Did ok."

And Don Howe? Buggered if I know why the Fai saw fit to choose him as one of Europe's supreme kingmakers with an innate knowledge of Irish football... Perhaps he won a raffle or something. The whole set up, if accurate, is all very 'Father Ted'.
On the way into the stadium, an elderly San Marino Steward waved us in and said "Tonight, may the best team win"

    And they nearly did.

Yesterday's Irish Times' sub-headline was funny, something like "The FAI expects to finalise the appointment of the 3 man selection committee in time to learn that Delaney will appoint Venables". Well, it'd be funny if it wasn't seemingly true.

I really worry about the objectivity and current knowledge of the names suggested.

In theory, the selection committee has a good blend.
Townsend was an excellent captain for us, a thorough professional on the pitch. It's not a bad idea to have an ex player there.
Just as long as they apply objectivity to Venables.

    Two ex-players.

As I said before (sounding like Giles now), just because you worked with someone, it doesn't mean you'd recommend them for the same job elsewhere. Quite the contrary perhaps in some instances. It doesn't worry me that they know Venables. In fact it could work the other way UNLESS they are friends.

The times are on the ball.....Apparently Delaney got his knuckles rapped last night..however he is cute and sharp...he has still got the guys who will ratify his choice

AFAIK, he will reveal considerably more on Setanta this evening.
