I think Whelan and Reid offer a better mix of contrasts.

Very odd I went to the match and there was no sign of him intresting as he was saying he was hoping for the bench and maybe a start!! Andrews was dropped but played well when he came on. Think that puts pay to trap starting him back to Whelan and Andrews against Italy

Reidy played 70 mins in Blackburn reserves 3-0 win tonight against Everton....and he scored!! Word has it he played pretty well and is starting to show glimpses of his old form. Hopefully he can break back into the first team and get a few premier league matches now.
“I’d always play Pirlo but Trapatoni says his first concern is to avoid losing goals. The truth is that we didn’t know what we were doing out there" Gennaro Gattuso, June 2004.

not in the squad today VS Arsenal, slight achilles niggle blamed for him missing out
    Andrews starts in centre midfield

short Q&A with him here: http://www.rovers.co.uk/page/NewsDet...797926,00.html
What's it like playing for Giovanni Trappatoni? And has he kept in regular contact with you whilst you've been out?
    Kev, Dublin

I've really enjoyed playing for him and his enthusiasm for the game has rubbed off on all of us, which is probably why I've enjoyed my best form for Ireland under him. I've spoken to him regularly - and Liam Brady and Alan Kelly as well - to give them updates.

It's always slightly surprised me how many people on here see Stephen Reid as the answer to all our prayers and when/if he comes back we'll be world beaters
I agree that when he's on form he's a good strong athletic midfielder (and good with set-pieces) but I think he's been so injury prone there has to be question marks over his availability for WC2010 (IF we get there)

What is the latest with his progress anyway and do any of you think the following can happen before the 1st playoff on 14th November:
    a) he regains his fitness
    b) he regains his place in the Blackburn team and gets sufficient game-time under his belt
    c) he regains his form

And even if all the above is achieved will Trap definitely put him straight back into our first 11 and change a relatively settled side

    That's the other Reid.

Obviously there will always be ?? around the health of Steven Reid's? legs??
He is one of our best players.
We have played better with Reid in the team than out of the team.
We look forward to his return because we can use such a player at CM to add to a team that has improved over the past year.
Blackburn also look forward to his return because they are a better team with him in it.

And even if all the above is achieved will Trap definitely put him straight back into our first 11 and change a relatively settled side
A slide rule towards his fitness levels will be his ability to get back on a Blackburn team that has Andrews at CM.
    Trap is no fool.

I think at this stage no one sees Reid as ever likely to be in our midfield every game. However, a viewing of the Georgia and Montenegro games show just how much he offers and how the team plays so much better with him in there. I think the fact Trap named him in the Italy/Montenegro squad shows he's willing to put him in whenever he's fit.
It's a shame we don't really have many other quality options but you'd hope someone will come through sooner rather than later.

I've always found him to be a slow starter returning from injury. We're running out of games between now and 14th November for him to be anything like the player he was at the start of the campaign.
I pity the fool!.... But suggest ways that he might improve himself.

His involvement would be a risk at this stage, for sure, but if he puts in a few good performances for Blackburn in the Premier League over the next month, I think it would be a bigger risk not to play him.

It's simple. If he dislodges Andrews from the Blackburn team, then he dislodges Andrews from the Ireland team. I wouldn't go dropping Glenn Whelan.

Interesting stuff from Trap today...I'm not familiar with the cartilage injections that were banned that used to be legal, can anybody fill me in on that?

“The problem for Steven is that the cartilage is gone and the bone is rubbing against bone. Ten, 20, even 50 years ago there were injections available that would allow cartilage to be covered up, but they’ve banned them because they’re very dangerous.

“But very seldom does cartilage heal normally, so I am worried. He is very important to us and I pray that he will be okay.”

And if Andy can dislodge himself from that door that he got stuck in, I'm sure Trap will pick him.

My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method, is love. I love you Sheriff Truman.

So, reading that Star article today, did Reid get injured again or is Trap just being pessimistic about his hopes of getting back from the injury that hampered him last season?

It's not a complete lost cause: Shearer came back from it, Fat Ronaldo came back from it, Roy Keane did too.

youd wonder what would happen if you put Hunt and Kilbane in the centre, two real runners and workhorses? The point has repeatedly been made the Whelan and Andrews, dont do any job whatsoever... Also Lawrence looks pretty good, whats his natural position?
